WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey team scored early and often Saturday afternoon to defeat host Wake Forest 5-0 in a top-five Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at Kentner Stadium. The No. 1 Tar Heels improved to 12-0 (2-0 ACC) on the season with their seventh consecutive shutout. No. 4 Wake Forest fell to 5-4 (1-2 ACC).
UNC got its first goal just over a minute into the contest and was up 4-0 at halftime. "Our goal was to score early and we were able to do that," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We feel like in some games we've had lots of first-half chances and haven't done a good job of taking advantage of them, so we wanted make something happen early today."
Senior Rachel Dawson blasted a shot on UNC's first penalty corner of the game that put the Tar Heels up 1-0 just 1:05 into the contest. Senior Jesse Gey and freshman Katelyn Falgowski assisted on the play.
Carolina's next goal came at the 14:09 mark, when junior Britt van Beek took a pass from sophomore Illse Davids and scored from the right side. Just over five minutes later, UNC got another goal, this one from senior Alli Tanner. After a save by the Demon Deacons' Alex Mann, Tanner gathered the rebound and lifted the ball up and over the Wake Forest goalkeeper to put UNC ahead 3-0.
Two minutes before halftime, the Tar Heels scored on another penalty corner when Davids deflected Dawson's initial shot into the goal. UNC almost added another goal just before halftime, but sophomore Melanie Brill's penalty stroke shot hit the crossbar with one second on the clock.
Carolina's final goal came just over two minutes into the second half, when senior Laree Beans scored unassisted to make it 5-0.
Among the Tar Heel supporters at Kentner Stadium were two busloads of members of Carolina Fever, a student spirit group. "The Fever was huge for us," Shelton said. "It's so nice to have the support of our student body. We really appreciate the fact that they made the trip."
Next up for the Tar Heels is another conference game, this one against No. 10 Boston College. The Eagles visit Henry Stadium on Saturday for a game that has been set for 10:30 a.m. due to the UNC-Miami football kickoff at noon. Fans can check TarHeelBlue.com this week for more information on parking for that game. UNC hosts Radford on Sunday at 1 p.m.
