CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - With goals from a pair of seniors and another outstanding defensive performance, the top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team beat No. 10 Boston College 2-0 Saturday morning at Francis E. Henry Stadium to improve to 13-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The shutout was the eighth in a row for the Tar Heels, who last gave up a goal against Villanova on Sept. 8. Boston College fell to 8-4 overall and 1-3 in the ACC.
UNC got off 28 shots and drew 17 penalty corners in the game, but Boston College goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz made 17 saves to keep her team close. The two-goal output was UNC's lowest since a 2-1 win over James Madison on Sept. 2, nine games ago. The Tar Heels are averaging more than five goals per game for the season.
"I was please with the win," North Carolina coach Karen Shelton said. "I think we grow from games like today, where we run into a hot goalkeeper. Berkowitz was outstanding. I thought our team played well defensively. They only got one shot on goal and two penalty corners - against a top-10 team, that's a feat. I'm very pleased with the team's level of composure in the backfield."
UNC got on the board in the 20th minute of play, on the fourth of a string of consecutive penalty corners. Freshman Katelyn Falgowski sent a shot to the right side of the goal and senior Laree Beans deflected it in for her seventh goal of the season.
The Tar Heels picked up their second in the 65th minute, on another penalty corner. Senior Rachel Dawson lifted a direct shot into the right side of the cage for her team-high 13th score of the season. Assists came from senior Jesse Gey and Falgowski, who leads the nation with 17 assists this season.
"I felt like we were a little bit lackluster in the first half and I think we also played a little individually," Shelton said. "Our game is sharing the ball. It's important for us to pass the ball, to support each other and make good things happen."
UNC returns to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. home game against Radford. The Tar Heels will celebrate Senior Day, honoring their seven seniors - Beans, Dawson, Xan Funk, Gey, Heather Kendell, Liz Morris and Alli Tanner - before the game at Henry Stadium.
