DURHAM, N.C. - After strong showings over the summer, North Carolina sophomores Alex White and Drew Poulk were each recognized as top prospects in their respective wooden bat leagues by Baseball America last week. White was rated as the No. 14 prospect in the Cape Cod Baseball League, while Poulk was ranked seventh in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
White, who was 6-7 with a 4.94 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 98 1/3 innings for the Tar Heels as a rookie, bounced back from a tough stretch in the NCAA Tournament with a sparkling 2.10 ERA in 25 2/3 innings with the Chatham A's. He went 2-1 in seven appearances and struck out 31, while walking just eight.
Poulk hit .275 with four home runs and 11 RBI in 38 games for the Tar Heels in 2007 and went on to win NECBL rookie of the year honors with the Newport Gulls. He hit .354 with 12 doubles, two homers and 16 RBI over 30 games en route to first-team all-league honors.
Poulk, White and the Tar Heels are in the midst of fall team workouts, which conclude October 5.
