Tar Heels Kick Off Season at the Cougar Classic

Chapel Hill, N.c. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team tees it up for the first time this fall at the Cougar Classic at Hanahan, S.C. The tournament starts this Sunday and concludes Tuesday. The Cougar Classic is being hosted by College of Charleston.

The Tar Heels look forward to starting the season off strong after placing 21st at the NCAA Women's Golf Championship last May. The Tar Heels lost only one golfer who played in the Championship, Katie Miller, to graduation. Last year the Tar Heels placed second at the Cougar Classic, losing by only one stroke. Tar Heel Lauren Hunt will defend her championship at the Cougar Classic, which she won last year marking her first collegiate victory.

The Tar Heels return seniors Laura Caniff, Ann Laney, and Colette Lowe, juniors Sydney Crane and Lauren Hunt, and sophomore Kate Thomas. Joining the Tar Heels are freshmen Jordan Allyne and Margaret Pentrack. Experience will play an important role for the Tar Heels this season. Coach Austin believes the Tar Heels "are capable of doing some really good things this year." She clearly states the team goal is "to improve every tournament and finish strong at NCAA's." The Cougar Classic is the first stepping stone in achieving this goal.

The Cougar Classic is being played at Yeamans Hall Golf Club, a par 72 - 6,159-yard golf course. The field contains many elite golf teams, including three teams who qualified for the NCAA Women's Golf Championship last year. The Tar Heels are expected to compete for the team title.
