
Henning Captures Weight Throw On Day One of Penn State National

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Freshman Walter Henning eclipsed the NCAA provisional mark in the weight throw on Friday at the Penn State National in University Park, Pa. Henning threw the 35 lb weight 70-03.00 surpassing the provisional mark of 63-11.75 and nearly equaling the automatic mark of 70-06.50. Several other Tar Heels competed on Friday including Addie Bracy who set a new pr and took second in the 5,000. The meet will conclude on Saturday.
Henning making his first collegiate appearance in the weight throw did not disappoint as he nearly set an NCAA automatic mark with his toss of 70-03. Henning had thrown the shot put in his two previous meets this year and will participate in the event again on Saturday looking for his second qualifying mark in as many days.
Also competing for the men on Friday was Brock Baker who also set a pr in the 5,000 as he finished 10th with a time of 14:52.03. Mateo Sossah competed in the 60-meter hurdles and finished in a time of 8.57, failing to advance past the preliminaries. The indoor distance medley relay team cut 21 seconds off their best time of the season on Friday as the group of Adam Smith, Ian Williamson, Andrew Rotz and John Curtiss finished the race in a time of 10:03.73 which put them in fourth place.
Joining Henning in the field events was Daniel Keller who tied for sixth in the pole vault as he cleared 15-05.00. Freshman Austin Davis took seventh in the long jump as he recorded a mark of 22-11.75, ahead of teammate Edward Baldwin III who jumped 21-10.75.
On the women's side, Addie Bracy set a new pr in the 5,000 as she crossed the line in 17:02.02, nearly 13 seconds faster than her previous best. LaToya James' steak of provisional marks ended Friday but she was able to place seventh in the 60-meter hurdles final with a time of 8.44. Joining James in the 60-meter hurdles was Vanneisha Ivy who failed to qualify for the finals but ran an 8.64 in the preliminaries and an 8.67 in the semi-finals. Tyra Johnson (7.65) and Shardae Anderson (7.80) both competed in the 60-meter dash but were unable to advance further than the preliminaries, although Johnson fell .01 shy of tying for the final spot to get to the semis.
In the field events, Ashley Hill (17-02) and Gabby Gioia (17-00.75) finished in 19th and 21st, respectively in the long jump. Jocleyn White continued her solid season in the weight throw as she finished in 10th with a toss of 54-11.25.
