UNC Rowing Opens Fall Racing With Wins

OCCOQUAN, Va. - The North Carolina rowing team opened its fall competition Sunday by taking first place in both events it entered at the Occoquan Chase regatta.
The Tar Heels entered three varsity eight boats and finished first, fourth and eighth in a field of 13 teams in the open women's eight race. UNC's first varsity eight won the race with a time of 17:09.24, with George Mason in second at 17:51:32. UNC's second varsity eight finished in 18:04.19 and the third Carolina boat crossed in 18:35.85.
UNC entered a total of four boats in the women's open fours race, with Carolina's top boat winning by a margin of 1:20 in 18:56.38. George Mason took second again and Tar Heel boats were third (20:21.37) and fourth (20:27.35). UNC's fourth boat finished seventh in a time of 21:05.88.
"We're definitely pleased with the results," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "It was a nice chance for us to race multiple times and see what we had. This was our season opener - we did scrimmage Duke a few weeks ago, but this was our first competitive regatta - and we were excited to see how we did against some of the teams like George Mason that we'll see later on in the spring.
"There are still things to work on, but we feel like we're on the right path. I'm very pleased with the way we rowed today."
Carolina's other competition of the fall is the Head of the Chattahoochee regatta Nov. 1 and 2 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
