PALM BEACH, Fla. - Freshman kicker Casey Barth was named one of three Lou Groza Stars of the Week for his performance in Carolina's 29-24 win over Notre Dame on Saturday. Barth finished the day with three field goals and two extra points and moved into second on the team in scoring with 24 on the year. Barth was joined as a weekly winner by Texas kicker Junior Lawrence and Toledo kicker Alex Steigerwald.
True freshman Casey Barth's three field goals turned out to be the difference in North Carolina's home defeat over Notre Dame at Chapel Hill last Saturday. Barth connected on boots of 41, 34 and 42 yards in the Tar Heels 29-24 nail biter. In a game that was filled with bizarre twists and turns, it was only fitting that a true freshman walk on kicker's points would make the difference in the outcome.
The Lou Groza Collegiate Place Kicker Award presented by the Fed Ex Orange bowl will be announced on the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards aired on ESPN on Thursday December 11th. The three finalists will be honored at the Lou Groza Awards Banquet at the Palm Beach County Convention Center on Tuesday December 9th. The award, is named for National Football League (NFL) Hall of Fame kicker Lou "the Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an "All Pro" offensive lineman, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
