Nicks, Shriver Named Progress Energy Performers Of The Week

CHAPEL HILL - Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks had nine receptions for 141 yards in the 29-24 win over Notre Dame and forward Brian Shriver had a goal and an assist in the 2-0 men's soccer win at Duke to share Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors for October 6-12, 2008.
Nicks, a junior from Charlotte, recorded his eighth career 100-yard game, which set a UNC record. He shared the mark with Octavus Barnes. Nicks, who had seven catches for 116 yards in the first half, recorded a catch for the 19th straight game and the 28th time in 29 career outings.
Shriver, a senior from Clearwater, Fla., scored in the 18th minute on header off a Zach Loyd cross and followed in the 74th with an unassisted strike to lead the Tar Heels to their first win in Durham since 2000. With the two goals, Shriver took over the Tar Heels' scoring lead and now has nine goals on the year after tallying eight over his first three seasons at UNC.

Sophomore linebacker Quan Sturdivant returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown on Notre Dame's opening drive of the second half to bring the Tar Heels within a point at 17-16. It was the 13th pick of the season for UNC, which entered the week as the nation's leader in interceptions. Sturdivant has three career interceptions, including two this season. Sturdivant had 10 tackles vs. the Irish, the second game in a row in which he has recorded 10 or more tackles (11 vs. Connecticut).

Barth booted three field goals, all in the first half, of Carolina's 29-24 win over Notre Dame. Barth made field goals from 41, 24 and 42 yards. He tied the single-game school record for most field goals by a freshman with three. He shares the record with two other UNC players, including his brother, Connor, who accomplished the feat twice in 2004.

Averbuch had her best offensive game of the season as she scored two goals and added an assist in Sunday's 4-0 win over Virginia Tech. Averbuch scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season in the first half and then added an assist on UNC's third goal. Including a win over Boston College last Thursday, UNC improved to 13-1-1 on the season and 6-0 in the ACC.

Fogleman and Donato went 3-1 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-America Championships in Tulsa, Okla., to reach the doubles in semifinals. The semifinal finish was the furthest a Tar Heel duo has advanced in the tournament since Raian Luchici and Brad Pomeroy made the finals in 2005. Included in the three wins for UNC was a Round of 16 win over the No. 1-ranked collegiate doubles team in the country.

Sydney Crane led the Tar Heels to a tie for second place at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tenn. Crane tied for eighth place after firing an even par 216 total. Crane opened up the event by firing a four-under-par 68 in the first round. She followed that with an even par 72 in the second round followed by a four-over 76 in Sunday's final round.
The Tar Heels carded a 10-over 874 total to tie with NC State for second place in the team race, nine strokes behind champion LSU. Carolina carded a one-over 289 in the first round followed by an even par 288 in the second round before slipping to a nine-over 297 on Sunday.

Rowing
Kelsey Grich, Whitney Hileman, Megan McMullin and Katie Wood rowed in the Tar Heels' top eight and and in the team's top four, both of which took firsts in their respective races at the Occoquan Chase regatta on Sunday as UNC opened the fall rowing season. Grich is a sophomore from Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., Hileman is a senior from Winston-Salem, McMullin is a junior from Burke, Va., and Katie Wood is a senior from Charlotte.
