No. 10 Tar Heels Thump Tribe, 4-1

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Reigning Atlantic Coast Conference and national player of the week Brian Shriver registered his second straight multi-goal game to send No. 10 North Carolina to a 4-1 win over William & Mary Tuesday at Albert-Daly Field. Shriver scored a pair of first half goals, and Garry Lewis and Alex Dixon followed with second half tallies for the Tar Heels (10-2-1).
Shriver, who took over the ACC goal-scoring lead with his 10th and 11th goals on the season, put the Tar Heels on the board with an unassisted strike in the 20th minute and followed with what proved to be his fourth game-winner of the year in the 39th minute.
The first goal for this week's TopDrawerSoccer.com player of the week, came off a turnover by the Tribe (6-4-2), while the second came when midfielder Michael Callahan chipped the ball over the defense to Shriver, who finished to the left for a 2-0 UNC lead. Callahan picked up his fourth assist on the play.
After intermission, Lewis extended the Tar Heels' lead to 3-0 with his second goal of 2008 in the 61st minute off an assist from Kirk Urso, who leads the squad with five helpers on the season.
William & Mary, which entered the match ranked No. 16 in this week's official NCAA Ratings Percentage Index, got on the board in the 84th minute when Alan Kroger found the back of the net on a feed from Nathan Belcher.
Dixon answered less than two minutes later with his fifth goal off the bench in the 86th for the final three-goal margin. Fellow freshman Chris Lebo and Zach Loyd each picked up assists on the play.
Senior goalkeeper Jacob Wescoe went the distance in goal, as did Andrew McAdams, who made two stops for the Tribe.
Carolina outshot William & Mary, 13-11, while the teams each logged three corner kicks.
With the four goals Tuesday, the Tar Heels now have 33 this season for their most since 2005 to rank among the national leaders. Shriver's 11 goals are the most by a UNC striker since Ben Hunter that same season.
The Tar Heels return to action at home Saturday against Virginia Tech at 7 p.m.
