Nicks, Prussing Named Progress Energy Performers Of The Week

CHAPEL HILL - Hakeem Nicks scored four touchdowns in a 45-24 win over 23rd-ranked Boston College and Lauren Prussing led the volleyball team to wins over Clemson and Georgia Tech to earn Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors for October 20-26, 2008.
Nicks had eight catches for 139 yards, including second-quarter touchdowns from quarterback Cameron Sexton covering 26, 40 and 43 yards. Nicks added three rushes for 31 yards, including a 12-yard scoring dash.
Prussing, a senior outside hitter from Highlands Rach, Colo., had 24 kills in the wins over Clemson and Georgia Tech. She committed just five errors on her 61 attempts as she hit .295 from her outside hitter position. Prussing led the team in kills in both matches with 11 in the weekend opener against the Tigers before tallying 13 more against Georgia Tech on Sunday. Prussing has now reached double figures in kills in six of her last seven matches and now sits 31 kills shy of 1,000 for her career.

Burney had two interceptions, one he returned to the Boston College 1-yard line to set up a UNC touchdown, and Goddard returned another interception 51 yards for his first collegiate touchdown.

Sexton was 19 for 30 for 238 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the win over Boston College. It was his first three-touchdown passing game as a Tar Heel.

Robert Riesen tied for ninth place at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges last weekend at The Ridges Golf and Country Club, a par 72, 7,147-yard layout, in Jonesborough, Tenn. Riesen fired a three-under-par 69 in the final round after earlier rounds of 73-75. Riesen finished with a one-over 217 total, seven strokes out of first place. This was Riesen's top performance this fall.
Carolina finished sixth in the team race with a 19-over 883 total. The Tar Heels fired a two-over 290 on Sunday after earlier rounds of 299-294. This concludes Carolina's fall season. The Tar Heels begin their spring campaign March 8-9 at the General Hackler Championship in Murrells Inlet, S.C.

The Landfall Tradition, Women's Golf

Allie White tied for 12th place at The Landfall Tradition last weekend at the Country Club of Landfall, a par 72, 6,064-yard layout, in Wilmington, N.C. White fired rounds of 75-74-79 for a 12-over-par 228 total. This was White's third top-15 finish this fall.
White led Carolina to a tie for third place in the team race. The Tar Heels carded rounds of 305-303-308 for a 916 total. This concludes Carolina's fall campaign. The Tar Heels begin their spring season March 8-10 at the UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla.
LAYNE BRODIE
Women's Swimming
Freshman, Atlanta, Ga.
Freshman Layne Brodie was the winner of the high point award at the Lady Mustang Dallas Classic after taking three second place and one fourth place finish in a field of six Top 25 ranked teams. Brodie took second place in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:02.59, second place in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:15.40, second place in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:02.93 and fourth place in the 100-yard butterfly at 56.06. She moved into fourth place and sixth place, respectively on UNC'a All-Time Top 10 charts in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, respectively. She also swam the butterfly leg on UNC's 400 medley relay which placed second and helped lead the Tar Heels to a second-place tie in the team standings with host SMU. Brodie's 100 breast time is No. 1 in the ACC, her 200 breast time is No. 2 in the ACC, her 100 fly time is No. 1 in the ACC and her 200 IM time is No. 1 in the ACC through results of October 25, 2008.
COURTNEY JONES
Women's Soccer
Freshman, Danville, Calif.
Jones scored two goals and had one assist as second-ranked North Carolina tallied five second-half goals en route to a 5-1 victory at seventh-ranked Virginia on October 24. Jones assisted on the first goal of the game in the 51st minute and then she scored two goals of her own just 4:59 apart in the 73rd and 78th minutes to increase the Tar Heel lead to 4-0 en route to the eventual 5-1 win. Jones is now second on the Tar Heel team in goals scored with nine and in points with 21.
