Tar Heels Eliminated At All-American Championships

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. --- North Carolina juniors Sanaz Marand and Katrina Tsang were eliminated in the first round of the singles main draw Thursday at the Riviera/ITA Women's All American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club. Fellow Tar Heel Austin Smith was also eliminated from the qualifying draw consolation tournament.
In main draw action, No. 10 Marand fell in straight sets to No. 11 Georgia Rose of Northwestern, 6-1, 6-2. Tsang, ranked No. 23 in the nation, lost a tough three-set match to No. 22 Claire Ilcinkas of California, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
No. 76 Smith opened the consolation bracket with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over No. 53 Lauren Macfarlane of Florida State on Wednesday. On Thursday, Smith fell to No. 114 Alejandra Guerra of UNC Greensboro, 6-2, 6-1.
Also on Wednesday, Marand and Tsang were eliminated from the qualifying draw doubles tournament by No. 30 Amanda McDowell and Irina Falconi of Georgia Tech, 8-3.
Next up for Carolina is the ITA Southeast Regional Championships at Wake Forest, Oct. 22-27.
