CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 7 North Carolina held the nation's top offense in check for much of the night, but No. 1 Wake Forest struck for three goals in a six-minute span in the second half en route to a 4-2 victory on the Tar Heels' Senior Night Saturday at Fetzer Field. The third-largest crowd in UNC men's soccer history - 3,727 fans - took in the action.
Zack Schilawski scored twice and Cody Arnoux and Sam Cronin also found the back the net in the second half for the unbeaten Demon Deacons (16-0-1, 6-0-1 ACC). Cameron Brown and Michael Callahan scored for the Tar Heels (11-5-1, 3-4-0 ACC).
The loss was the third straight for Carolina, which plays its regular season finale at fourth-ranked Maryland Friday, Nov. 7. With the victory, Wake Forest extended its unbeaten streak to 21 games dating to last season.
After UNC had the run of play for much of the opening half, Brown's goal gave the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead just before intermission. The Garland, Texas, product fired a strike from just inside the 18 and into the left side off a feed from Brian Shriver at 43:47.
To create the scoring opportunity, Brown made a run up the left side and fed Shriver just outside the 18. Shriver tapped the ball back to Brown just inside the box, and his blast found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Brown's shot was the seventh of the opening half for Carolina, which held Wake Forest without a shot. The Demon Deacons had a pair of dangerous free kicks early in the first period but could not convert until their second-half outburst.
Trailing 1-0, Wake knotted the score at 63:13 when Cody Arnoux scored on an open net from 25 yards out following a scramble. UNC keeper Jacob Wescoe came out of the box to challenge on the play, and Arnoux chipped the ball over the UNC defense to knot the score at one.
Just 1:08 later, the Deacons grabbed a lead they would not relinquish when Schilawski scored his first goal from 18 yards out off a through ball from Arnoux.
After taking the lead in the 65th minute, Wake extended it just over four minutes later when Schilawski's cross intended for Marcus Tracy was redirected into the net by UNC defender Sheanon Williams at 68:39 for a 3-1 Deacon lead.
From that point on, the teams traded penalty kick goals to close the action. Cronin converted for Wake Forest in the 80th minute after an open-net foul in the box by Carolina's Ryan Adeleye.
Callahan brought the Tar Heels within two scores on a PK of his own just over two minutes later. Billy Schuler was brought down in the box by a Wake Forest defender, and Callahan, Carolina's senior captain, converted past Wake's Akira Fitzgerald for his second goal of the season in his final regular season tilt at Fetzer Field.
UNC finished with a 13-10 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corners.
