NORFOLK, Va.. - The setting changed but the result didn't as North Carolina and Old Dominion met in field hockey on Saturday afternoon for their second matchup of the season. Sixth-ranked UNC won 3-1 at Powhatan Sports Complex, the same score by which the Tar Heels beat the Lady Monarchs when the two met in Chapel Hill on Sept. 19. Carolina improved to 13-4 with the victory, while ODU fell to 7-12.
UNC returns to action on Sunday, hosting Davidson for the final home game of the regular season. Game time at Francis E. Henry Stadium is 1 p.m. and the Tar Heels will honor seniors Kate Scholl and Britt van Beek in Senior Day ceremonies prior to the match.
On Saturday, Tar Heel junior Illse Davids scored the gamewinner 5:35 into the action, sending a shot from the top left of the circle past ODU keeper Kelly Driscoll for an unassisted goal, her seventh of the season.
The next Carolina goal came just over six minutes later, courtesy of reserve forward Teryn Brill, a redshirt freshman who got the ball from freshman Taryn Gjurich on a breakaway. The goal was Brill's third of the season.
Sophomore Kiki Norbruis scored the third goal on a penalty corner in the 17th minute of play. Scholl and van Beek earned assists on the score, Norbruis's fourth this fall.
The Tar Heels outshot the Lady Monarchs 17-0 in the first period, but ODU managed six second-half shots to just three by UNC. At the 49:07 mark, sophomore Samantha Richardson grabbed a rebound after a save by UNC goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell and scored to draw the Lady Monarchs within two, 3-1.
"It was important for us to bounce back after our loss to Maryland last weekend," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We played exceptionally well for the first 15 minutes or so of the game and we controlled the game for most of the first half. I'm very pleased with the win.
"I do want to compliment and comment on Old Dominion - they fought hard and at times they outplayed us and outhustled us, but I thought our team handled it well. Now it's important for us to come back home and get ready to play Davidson Sunday for Senior Day."
