CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The North Carolina rowing team saw its top boats place ninth in the Women's Championship 8+ and fifth in the Women's Championship 4+ in competitive racing Saturday at the Head of the Chattahoochee Regatta, UNC's final competition of the fall racing season.
In the eights, Carolina's top boat came across in 17:16.1 to take ninth. Clemson won the race in 16:18.7, followed by Louisville, Tennessee and Texas. UNC's second varsity eight was 17th in the field of 26, finishing in 17:48.1.
In the fours, UNC's top boat finished the course in 18:37.0. Clemson again was first (18:08.2), followed by Louisville, Tennessee and Clemson's "B" entry. Carolina also took 17th, 19th and 25th in the 28-boat field.
"This was a really fast race," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We knew it was going to be - some of the top teams in the country are here. We were really excited to see how we stacked up against those crews, considering that we've had a pretty successful fall.
"We felt like we put it all out there, we did everything we could and we had some really good races. We weren't necessarily pleased with where that stacked us up as far as being ninth and 17th, but we do realize that the crews that beat us were some of the top teams in the country.
"In the fours, it's the same thing: we're really proud of our first four for coming in fifth and moving that boat really well."
The Tar Heels continue racing on Sunday, with five UNC pairs set to compete. Racing together will be Katie Wood and Megan McMullin, Kristi Roblin and Whitney Hileman, Kasey Munson and Andi Drabot, Kelsey Grich and Kathleen Reynolds and Eugenia Delbono and Paige Wolf.
"We're excited for the pairs tomorrow to see how we do in that category, as well as to finish up our fall racing season on as positive a note as we started," Handy said. "We raced well today and after the weekend, we'll look and see where our strengths are, where our weaknesses are."
