With Saturday's loss to NC State, North Carolina has dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season and falls to 7-4 and 3-4 in the ACC. Butch Davis is 11-12 in his two seasons at UNC.
The 31- point loss to the Wolfpack marked the Tar Heels' worst defeat in the series since a 40-6 loss in Raleigh in 1989. The defeat was also the worst for UNC since a 52-7 loss at Clemson in 2006.
Carolina's six turnovers were its most since a 9-turnover performance in a loss to Miami (Ohio) in 2002. The Tar Heels are minus-12 in turnover margin in their four losses and plus-16 in their seven victories.
After going just 1-for-11 on third down at Maryland, Carolina was just 3-for-11 on third down against the Wolfpack and is just 4-for-22 over the last two games.
Over the last two games, The Tar Heels have held the ball just 41:25 compared to 78:35 for the opposition.
UNC posted a season-low 203 yards of total offense for its second fewest yards gained under Butch Davis. The Tar Heels gained just 164 yards at South Florida last season for the lowest mark under Davis.
NC State compiled 466 yards of total offense for the second-most yards allowed by Carolina this season. Notre Dame put up 472 yards against the Tar Heels earlier this year.
Senior linebacker Mark Paschal posted 10 tackles in the first half and finished with a season-high 13 stops for his fourth straight double-digit tackle effort. Paschal has six double-digit tackle games this season.
Sophomore quarterback T.J. Yates made his first start since suffering a fractured left ankle against Virginia Tech Sept. 20. Yates was 10-for-22 for 116 yards and one interception. Junior Cameron Sexton was 4-for-6 for 31 yards and two interceptions in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore tailback Ryan Houston scored his team-best eighth rushing touchdown in the third quarter on a 5-yard run to match the longest scoring play of his career. His eight TDs are the most by a Tar Heel on the ground since Chad Scott also ran for eight in 2004.
Junior wide receiver Hakeem Nicks finished with four catches for 56 yards to move within seven catches of the Carolina career record of 177 (Jarwarski Pollock, 2002-05). He also extended his school receiving yardage mark to 2,585 yards on 170 catches. Nicks, who has at least three catches in all 11 games this season, has registered a catch in 24 straight games and 33 of his 34 career contests.
Sophomore wide receiver Greg Little's 27-yard catch in the third quarter was the longest reception of his career. Little made two catches for a season-best 36 receiving yards.
Sophomore defensive tackle Marvin Austin recorded his first unassisted sack of the season in the second quarter when he dropped Russell Wilson for a 3-yard loss. Austin finished with two unassisted tackles, one sack and one quarterback hurry.
