Green, Ellington Lead Tar Heels Past UNC Pembroke

Danny Green and Wayne Ellington each had 16 points to lead six Tar Heels in double figures as the top-rated University of North Carolina men's basketball team defeated UNC Pembroke, 102-62, Saturday in an exhibition contest at the Smith Center.
Green and Ellington knocked in three three-pointers apiece and were joined in double figures by Deon Thompson (14) and Ty Lawson (14) and freshmen Tyler Zeller (13) and Ed Davis (12). Bobby Frasor made his return to action after a season-ending knee injury last December and hit three from behind the arc.
The Braves led 8-2 early on, but the Tar Heels broke open a close game with a 17-0 run midway through the first half. Carolina led 20-19 with 9:30 to play in the opening half. Zeller scored the next six points for a 26-19 lead. Ellington added a couple of baskets, including a three-pointer to help extend the lead to 37-19. The Tar Heels led by 19 at halftime.
Carolina shot 64.5 percent from the floor in the second half as UNC outscored the Braves, 58-37 over the final 20 minutes.
The Tar Heels, who were playing with four injured players, including starters Tyler Hansbrough and Marcus Ginyard, forced 29 UNC Pembroke turnovers that led to 36 points. Lawson and freshman point guard Larry Drew II combined for 10 steals and 11 assists. Thompson added a game-high 10 rebounds.
Davis was 6 for 6 from the floor and added six rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
Cortez Brown (14) and David Moore (10) led the Braves in scoring. Carolina held UNC Pembroke to 33.8 percent shooting from the floor.
The Tar Heels return to action next Saturday, November 15, at home in the season opener against Penn at 4 p.m.
