Chapel Hill, N.C. - Students enrolled in UNC's Exercise & Sport Science course "The Fundamentals of Sport Marketing" have organized a benefit golf tournament on April 15, 2009 entitled "Tee Off for Tar Heels." Every aspect of the golf tournament--from sales to advertising to sponsorship--will be orchestrated solely by the students, receiving some assistance from Dr. Richard Southall, a new UNC professor. Football players Richard Quinn and Kendric Burney are enrolled in the class this semester and have helped start the tournament.
The staff of nearly 70 undergraduate students at the University of North Carolina will spend nearly an entire scholastic year planning, executing, and producing "The Tee Off for Tar Heels" golf tournament for the community. The staff has divided itself up into the different organizational departments of a business and delegated the necessary work. "Tee Off for Tar Heels" will be an annual golf tournament, with each subsequent class working to improve the tournament's success.
The proceeds will benefit the Exercise & Sport Science department by providing scholarships for students in the program. The College Sport Research Institute, an organization committed to supporting independent data collection and analysis related to college-sport issues will also benefit from the tournament's revenue. CSRI was founded at the University of Memphis by distinguished faculty members in several exercise & sport science departments at universities nationwide. The institute moved to Chapel Hill in 2008.
UNC graduate students will produce a weekend academic conference, discussing the issues relevant to the College Sport Research Institute in correlation with the golf tournament. Several speakers established in the world of sports will attend the conference that will take place during the weekend following the tournament.
