North Carolina Postgame Notes vs. Clemson February 10, 2008
The 11-point deficit at halftime was the largest in any UNC game since the Tar Heels trailed Georgia Tech by 13 (42-55) on Feb. 15, 2006. UNC rallied that night for a 82-75 win behind 40 points from Tyler Hansbrough. Tonight, Hansbrough scored 39 in a 103-93 Tar Heel victory.
Prior to this season, UNC and Clemson had not played an overtime game since Jan. 4, 1978. This was the seventh overtime played between the two schools (the Tar Heels have won five of the seven).
This is the third double overtime game between the Tar Heels and Tigers and the first one won by UNC. Clemson beat Carolina in double OT on Dec. 3, 1963 and again in double overtime later that same year on Feb. 14, 1964.
Carolina now leads the series vs. Clemson, 120-19, including 33 of the last 39 meetings.
After losing seven consecutive overtime games, Carolina has now won three straight in extra time this season (at Clemson, at Florida State and tonight vs. Clemson).
This is the third time in school history that Carolina has played an ACC opponent in two overtime games in the same year (previous was against Clemson in 1963-64 and against Virginia in 1986-87. UNC beat Virginia 74-73 at home on Feb. 8, 1987 and beat the Cavaliers in the ACC semifinals in Landover, Md., 84-82).
Carolina is now an NCAA record 53-0 at home against Clemson. The 53-0 mark breaks a tie with Princeton over Brown for the most consecutive home wins against an opponent.
Tyler Hansbrough scored 39 points, the second-most by any player in a game in Smith Center history (he holds the record with 40 against Georgia Tech on Feb. 15, 2006). Hansbrough now holds the top two spots in Smith Center history.
Hansbrough broke the UNC career record for free throw attempts tonight. He attempted 19 tonight and has 820 in his career. Lennie Rosenbluth held the record, which he set from 1954-57, with 815. Hansbrough has made 634 free throws and is one behind Virginia's Jeff Lamp for fifth place in ACC history.
Hansbrough notes
... made a career high 17 free throws (previous 15 at Miami, Jan. 23, 2008)
... fourth career 30-point game and second this year (second time with 35 or
more in the last five games)
... 14th double-double this year and 30th of his career
... has 52 rebounds in the last three games, the third-most by any Tar Heel in
three consecutive games behind Billy Cunningham (71) and Rusty Clark (53)
... 7th time this year with 20 or more points, 11th time with 25 or more
points, eight time this year with at least 20 and 10
Hansbrough grabbed his 800th career rebound tonight and finished the game with 804, still 17th in UNC history.
Hansbrough is still is 11th place in UNC career scoring, but he went past 1,800 points and moved within three points of tying Bobby Lewis for 10th place. Hansbrough has 1,833 career points.
Hansbrough has 1,833 points, fourth-most in ACC history in points by a junior. He moved past both JJ Redick and Bryant Stith tonight. The only juniors with more points in ACC history are Dennis Scott of Georgia Tech (2,115), Jason Williams of Duke (2,079) and UNC's Antawn Jamison (1,974).
Marcus Ginyard sprained his right ankle late in the first half. Ginyard hit a three-pointer early in the second half tonight. It was his seventh three-pointer in the last six games - he hit zero three-pointers in the first 18 games this year.
Quentin Thomas handed out a career-high nine assists (previous was eight against Miami on Jan. 31, 2007. Thomas played a career-high 45 minutes (nine more than his previous high which was 36 at Florida State seven days ago). Thomas has played 116 minutes in the last three games (38.7 per) and has 22 assists and 18 turnovers in those three games.
Thomas scored six points tonight. He sent the game to overtime with a layup to tie at 82-82 with 26 seconds to play in regulation and hit a pair of free throws with 38 seconds left in the first overtime to tie the game at 90-90.
Wayne Ellington equaled his career high for three-pointers in a game with five en route to 28 points. That is the fourth time in his career he made five three-pointers in a game. That is the second-highest scoring output of his career. He had a career-high 36 points, including five threes, at Clemson on Jan. 6, 2008. That night, he hit the game-winning three with 0.4 seconds to play in overtime to beat the Tigers.
Prior to this evening, Ellington had made five three-pointers in the last five games.
Hansbrough (39) and Ellington (28) mark the first time since the 2004 ACC quarterfinal loss to Georgia Tech that two Tar Heels scored at least 25 points in the same game (Sean May had 27 and Rashad McCants had 25).
