The win today is Carolina¹s ninth in ACC play this season, assuring the Tar Heels of a winning record in ACC play for the 49th time in the 55-year history of the Atlantic Coast Conference. This is the fourth year in a row in which UNC will post a winning ACC record and the 41st time in the last 44 years the Tar Heel have accomplished that.

Carolina held Virginia Tech to 25.9 percent shooting from the floor and the Hokies made just 14 field goals. Both are season low marks against the Carolina defense this year. Previous lows were 27.1 percent and 14 field goals by Ohio State in UNC's win in Columbus on November 28.

Carolina out-rebounded the Hokies, 54-24. That is the largest margin (+30) on the boards this year for the Tar Heels, who came into today number one in the nation in rebound margin at 11.4 per game.

The 39-point margin of victory is Carolina¹s largest ever over Virginia Tech (85-51, +34 point win on Dec. 19, 2004), largest in an ACC game since a 41-point win over Miami (105-64 on Jan. 31, 2007) and the largest in any game since a 110-64 win over South Carolina State on Nov. 20, 2007.

This was the first time Carolina held an opponent under 30 percent shooting from the floor in both halves since the Gardner-Webb game on Nov. 19, 2005.

Tyler Hansbrough passed Walter Davis in career scoring and Bobby Jones and Mike O'Koren in career rebounding today. Hansbrough had 23 points and nine rebounds, the 26th time in 26 games he has scored in double figures and the 19th time this year he has scored 20 or more points.

Hansbrough now has 1,879 points, ninth-best in UNC history. He also has 820 career rebounds, 14th-best as a Tar Heel.

Hansbrough made 11 of 12 free throws today and is now 648 for 837 in his career. He passed Wake Forest's Len Chappell for fourth place alltime in free throws made by an ACC player (JJ Redick is third with 662).

Quentin Thomas had a career-high seven rebounds (previous was five) and confirmed that this was the first time in his Tar Heel career that he had two dunks in one game.

Thomas had seven assists today and has 32 assists in the last five games (6.4 per game). The ACC leader in assists is averaging 6.7 per game for the year.

Alex Stepheson scored an ACC career-high 11 points (previous was nine against Maryland this year). He tied his career high in any game (11 vs. South Carolina State). Stepheson also had nine rebounds, equaling his second-highest total in a game. He did have a career-high six offensive rebounds today.

Will Graves scored 10 points today, the second time in his career he has scored in double figures and the first time in an ACC contest. His previous ACC high for scoring was three against Maryland.

Wayne Ellington made three three-point field goals today, the third straight game in which he has made at least three from beyond the arc. In the last three games, Ellington is 11 for 22 from three-point range (50 percent).
