North Carolina Postgame Notes vs. Wake Forest -- Sunday, February 24, 2008
North Carolina won its 11th ACC game with an 89-73 win over Wake Forest. That is the 25th time in 55 ACC seasons the Tar Heels have won at least 11 games. This is the fourth year in a row UNC has won at least 11 ACC games, the first time in school history that has happened.
Tyler Hansbrough scored 29 points to move into eighth place in UNC career scoring. He has 1,940 points. He passed Brad Daugherty, who was eighth with 1,912.
Hansbrough's 29-point game marked the 24th time in his career and 13th time this year he scored 25 or more points in a game. Hansbrough is averaging 28.0 points in the last seven games (since Lawson went out with an injury).
Hansbrough has scored 365 points at the Smith Center this year. That is more points than any Tar Heel has scored in a single season. Rashad McCants held the previous record with 350 in 2002-03. With one game to play, Hansbrough has averaged 24.3 points at home this year. The UNC record for the Smith Center is 22.2 by Antawn Jamison in 1997-98.
Hansbrough made 11 of 14 free throws tonight to move past Duke's JJ Redick into third in history in free throws made by an ACC player. Hansbrough has made 669 free throws (Redick was third with 662). The only two ACC players with more made free throws are Duke's Christian Laettner (713) and Virginia's Bryant Stith (690).
Hansbrough grabbed five rebounds tonight, giving him 837 in his career. He passed two-time ACC Player of the Year Larry Miller for 13th place in Carolina history (Miller had 834).
Hansbrough had four steals, giving him nine in the last two games. He leads UNC in steals for the season with 44.
Carolina shot 56.0 percent from the floor against Wake Forest (28 for 50). That is the highest field goal percentage in an ACC game this year for the Tar Heels and marked the fourth straight game in which UNC shot 50 percent or better. It is the second straight game UNC shot an ACC-best. The Tar Heels made 52.5 percent at Virginia, 50 percent against Virginia Tech and 53.1 percent at NC State.
The 56.1 percent shooting from the floor was UNC's best in any game this year since it shot 57.1 against UC Santa Barbara.
Quentin Thomas had seven assists and three turnovers. He was making his sixth consecutive start at point guard. In the last seven games (including the Florida State game in which Ty Lawson got hurt), Thomas has 46 assists, 23 turnovers and 56 points. He is averaging 6.6 assists in those seven games. His assist-error ratio of 2 to 1 is the best among all ACC point guards in the last seven games. Thomas has seven or more assists in five of the six games in which he has started this year.
Wayne Ellington made three three-pointers, marking the fifth straight game he made at least three from beyond the arc. Ellington is 17 of 31 from three-point range (54.8 percent) in the last five games.
Danny Green had 15 points and nine rebounds. It was the 17th time this year he scored in double figures and the third straight time at the Smith Center.
Alex Stepheson tied his career high with three blocked shots.
Marcus Ginyard had career highs in both assists (six) and turnovers (six).
The win tonight was the 550th head coaching win in Roy Williams's career. He has an overall record of 550-133, a winning percentage of .805. That places him third in NCAA history among all coaches and first among active coaches. Williams has led UNC to a 132-32 record in five seasons. That is also a winning percentage of .805.
Carolina out-rebounded Wake Forest, 38-24. That marks the 23rd game in a row in which Carolina has out-rebounded its opponent (only teams to out-rebound the Tar Heels were Old Dominion and BYU in back-to-back games in Las Vegas in November).
