Carolina Golfers Finish Fifth At Lady Gator Invitational

The University of North Carolina women's golf team carded a 296 in the final round for an 898 total to finish in fifth place at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational, the Tar Heels' first event of the spring campaign. Tar Heel junior Lauren Hunt, from Little River, S.C., fired an even par 70 to finish sixth in the individual race.
Florida, the leader since the first round, captured the team title after carding a six-over-par 286 for an 849 total. Louisville finished a distant second with an 872 total while Wake Forest placed third at 875 and Mississippi finished fourth with an 892 total.
Sydney Crane, the Tar Heel junior who was the individual leader after the first round, carded a seven-over 77 in the final round. The Jamestown, N.C. native finished with a 12-over 222 total to tie for 21st place. Senior Ann Laney, from Charlotte, N.C., also shot 77 for a 232 total to tie for 45th place. Kate Thomas, a sophomore from Murwillumbah, Australia, fired a two-over 72, her best round of the tournament, for a 233 total and a tie for 50th. Colette Lowe, a senior from Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., struggled and posted an 84 in the final round to finish at 240 in a tie for 67th place. Tiffany Chudy of Florida captured the individual championship after firing an even par 70 in the final round for a one-under 209 total. Cindy LaCrosse of Louisville was the runner-up finishing three strokes back at 212 after carding a one-over 71 on Sunday. Whitney Myers of Florida finished in third place with a 213 total while Wake Forest's Natalie Sheary and Florida's Hannah Yun tied for fourth place with 214 totals.
The 54-hole event was played at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida, a par 70, 5,907-yard layout. Carolina returns to action March 3-4 at the SJSU Spartan Invitational in San Jose, Calif.
