COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Right fielder Tim Fedroff belted his first career grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs, and third baseman Chad Flack added a grand slam and five RBI in No. 3 North Carolina's 19-1 win over Maryland Sunday at Shipley Field. The Tar Heels (18-4, 7-2 ACC) scored five runs in the fourth, seven in the sixth and five in the eighth to help take their eighth straight series from the Terrapins (11-11, 2-7 ACC).
UNC outscored Maryland 33-2 over the final two games of the series after dropping the opener, 4-2.
Fedroff, who was 3-for-5 with four runs scored and six RBI, and Flack, who was 3-for-6 with three runs and five RBI, combined for the majority of the run production, but they were two of the six Tar Heels with at least two hits on the day.
Left fielder Kyle Shelton equaled career highs with four hits and three RBI, and first baseman Dustin Ackley, second baseman Kyle Seager and catcher Tim Federowicz had two hits each. In addition to his second career grand slam, Flack doubled twice, as did Seager, who extended his hitting streak to 18 games. Center fielder Seth Williams drove in two runs and hit safely for the 13th straight game, one shy of his career best.
Freshman right-hander Matt Harvey improved to 3-1 with four strikeouts over six strong innings for Carolina. He allowed one run on five hits and two walks. Four Tar Heel relievers combined for three shutout innings out of the bullpen. Maryland starter Jensen Pupa (0-3) allowed seven runs on 10 hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings.
The Tar Heels scored twice in the first on an RBI groundout by catcher Tim Federowicz and a double to left field by Flack, but broke the game open with five runs in the fourth when they sent 11 men to the plate.
Fedroff opened the scoring in the five-run inning with a two-RBI single through the right side, and Seager plated the next run with a sacrifice fly to right field. The second double from Flack and a walk to Fleury loaded the bases again. Williams then was hit by a pitch, and Shelton drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the final two runs in the inning.
The Tar Heels bettered their fourth-inning output with seven runs in sixth to grab a 14-0 lead. Singles by Federowicz and Fleury and a walk to Flack loaded the bases for Williams, who was hit by a pitch to drive in a run for the second time. Shelton then singled through the left side to score Flack, and Fedroff closed the inning with a grand slam out to right center on the first pitch he saw from reliever Brett Jones, who allowed all seven runs in the inning. Fedroff's home run was his team-high sixth of the season.
Maryland's lone run of the day came on a Chad Durakis sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth.
After a pair of walks and a single by Federowicz loaded the bases in the eighth, Flack hit an 0-2 pitch from Eric Potter out to left center for his third home run of the season. Pinch hitter Mike McKee then doubled off the wall in left and scored on a double by Shelton for the 19th and final run of the day for the Tar Heels, who scored their most runs since a 28-3 win over Davidson on March 28, 2007. The Tar Heels' 20 hits were their most since pounding out 20 a 10-6 win at Florida State on April 22, 2007.
Carolina is back in action in Cary this week against Davidson at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
