WALLACE, N.C. -- The North Carolina men's golf team finished the first round of the River Landing Intercollegiate in ninth place with a nine-over-par 297 on Friday afternoon. Leading the Tar Heels and the individuals is North Carolina's Kevin O'Connell, who is tied for first with Wake Forest's Webb Simpson. O'Connell and Simpson finished the first round with a five-under-par 67 total.
Florida and Duke are currently tied for first amongst the 15 teams with a four-under-par 284 team total. Two strokes behind the top spot is Maryland in third place with a two-under-par 286. Wake Forest is in fourth with a one-under-par 287 and NC State rounded out the top five with an equal 288.
Freshman Henry Zaytoun III, of Raleigh, N.C., is currently 39th with a three-over-par 75 total. Robert Riesen, a junior from Pinehurst, N.C., carded a five-over-par 77 to tie for 59th. Junior Chase MacFarland, of Savannah, Ga., and senior Barden Berry, of Kinston, N.C., finished the first round with a six-over-par 78 to tie for 70th.
Competing as individuals are North Carolina's Reed Darsie and David Holzworth. Darsie fired a one-over-par 73 total to tie for 25th. Holzworth is currently 59th after carding a five-over-par 77 total. Neither Darsie, nor Holzworth's score will count towards North Carolina's team score.
Behind first-placed O'Connell and Simpson are Florida State's Jonas Blixit and Duke's Clark Klaasen and Michael Schachner in third with a four-under-par 68. Tied for sixth is Liberty's Raul Jay Calvo and Maryland's Chris Gold with a three-under-par 69. Tulsa's Nicholas Geyger is currently in eighth after carding a two-under-par 70.
The tournament is being played in Wallace, N.C. on the par 72, 7,112 yard Landing Course. The tournament will resume Saturday morning. Live scoring is available on www.golfstat.com.
