Sandhu Wins Playoff, Men's Golf Runs Away With Title In Augusta
April 5, 2026 | Men's Golf
Sihan Sandhu made a 3-foot birdie on the third playoff hole Sunday to win the individual title in the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational, and the University of North Carolina won the team title with a near-record performance at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
Â
The Tar Heels played spectacular golf in routing a strong field in Augusta to win the tournament for the fifth time (1982, 1983, 1992, 2024 and 2026).
Â
Carolina shot rounds of 18-under 270, 12-under 276 and 24-under 264. Sunday's final round was the second-best in UNC history for both strokes and score to par.
Â
The Tar Heels' 54-hole totals were the third-best in UNC history for both strokes and score to par, bettered only in 2023-24 and 2024-25 in the Amer Ari Invitational in Waimea, Hawai'i.
Â
The 16th-ranked Tar Heels shot 54-under 810 to beat sixth-ranked Oklahoma State (-39) by 15 strokes. Carolina broke the previous tournament record by four strokes.
Â
No. 14 Pepperdine placed third at 38 under par, No. 4 LSU was fourth at 32 under, No. 23 Georgia and No. 26 Notre Dame tied for fourth at 28 under and No. 10 Illinois was eighth at 24 under.
Â
The 15-stroke win is the Tar Heels' largest margin of victory since beating Auburn by 18 in October 2023 in the Williams Cup at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington.
This is Carolina's second team title this season (tied for first in the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational in September) and the 26th in Andrew DiBitetto's nine seasons as head coach.
Â
Sandhu shot 68-67-66 to force a playoff with Georgia Southern's Thomas Horne at 15-under 201. The win is Sandhu's second collegiate title and his first in a full-field event (he won the Prestige Individual tournament in Indio, Calif., as a freshman).
Â
The sophomore from Ashland, Va., made 16 birdies and only one bogey over the three rounds. He broke his 54-hole collegiate bests for fewest strokes and score to par. Â Sandhu was tied for third place three shots out of the lead heading into Sunday's third round. He was 2 under on the day at the turn, then made birdies on four of the first six holes on the back nine to pull even with Horne.
Â
Sandhu was one of three Tar Heels to finish in the top five, one of four in the top 15 and five in the top 25.
Â
Niall Sheils Donegan (69-68-65) tied for third at 14-under 202, Carson Bertagnole (68-71-64) tied for fifth at 13-under 203, Grant Roscich (64-71-71) tied for 14th at 9-under 207 and Andrew Riley (71-70-69) tied for 23rd at 6-under 210.
Â
Sheils Donegan made two eagles on the front nine Sunday to tie for third, his best collegiate finish. It was his second top-five as a Tar Heel and second-straight finish in the top 10.
Â
Bertagnole led the Tar Heels on Sunday with nine birdies. He shot his third 64 of the season, and his fifth-place finish was his second top-five as a Tar Heel.
Â
Sandhu (201), Sheils Donegan (202) and Bertagnole (203) all set personal 54-hole collegiate bests for fewest strokes, and Roscich (207) tied his previous best.
Â
The five Tar Heels combined to shoot under par in all nine of their rounds. They combined to make two eagles, 78 birdies, 23 bogeys and one double.
Â
Sandhu is the second straight Tar Heel to win the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational. National Player of the Year David Ford won the title in 2025. Another Tar Heel, former NCAA champion John Inman, won the title in 1983.
Â
Carolina hosts the Tar Heel Intercollegiate Saturday (36 holes) and Sunday, April 11-12, at UNC Finley Golf Club.
