Carolina Earns Success At Knecht Cup

CAMDEN, N.J. - Led by the novice eight's first-place finish, the North Carolina rowing team saw all six of its boats place in the top 12 overall in a large field at the Knecht Cup Saturday and Sunday on the Cooper River.
"Across the board, it was an absolutely great weekend for Carolina rowing," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We saw a lot of improvement this weekend from the last time we raced a couple of weeks ago. All the boats advanced into the finals, which was great, and all the boats definitely showed that they took the things we've been working on the past couple of weeks and all season and applied them."
The novice eight won all three of its races on the weekend, taking first in its heat and semifinal on Saturday and in the grand final on Sunday in 7:05.05 to best a field of 24 boats. Racing in the Tar Heel novice eight were Jill Lunsford (coxswain), Paige Wolf, Katherine Williamson, Anna Noguchi, Cait Clendenin, Katie Frayler, Lindsay Paterniti, Vanessa Matos and Tallie Casucci.
The UNC second varsity eight finished third overall in an 18-boat field. The Tar Heels were second in their Saturday heat to advance to the semifinals that afternoon, where they took third to earn a spot in Sunday's grand final. A time of 6:57.9 put UNC third in the final. Carolina's second varsity eight lineup was Paige Wall (coxswain), Diane Reynolds, Chandler Sours, Andi Drabot, Andrea McGovern, Katie Wood, JoAnne Rogers, Kelsey Grich and Kristi Roblin.
The second novice eight won its only race of the weekend, finishing first in a field of five boats Saturday in 7:24.0. The UNC lineup was Sarah Nolan (coxswain), Brittany Walsh, Audrey Whitmeyer-Weathers, Lauren Maidment, Caroline Rekuc, Elizabeth Golly, Caitlin Long, Michelle Rugel and Ashley Trudeau.
The Tar Heel varsity four took third in Sunday's petite final in 8:05.4 to finish ninth overall in a field of 23. In Saturday's heats, UNC was fourth, then took third in its semifinal to advance to the petite final. Racing in that boat were Amy Dement (coxswain), Emily Schultz, Maeghan Sill, Eugenia Delbono and Molly Jones.
After finishing second in its heat and fourth in the semifinals Saturday, the Carolina novice four was second in the petite final Sunday in 8:35.8 to take eighth overall among 18 entries. Racing for the Tar Heels were Adrianne Hughes (coxswain), Laura Brookshire, Elena Boucher, Jocelyn Wang and Emily Johnson.
The varsity eight took sixth in Sunday's petite final in a time of 7:02.4 for 12th overall in a field of 24. Carolina was third in its heat on Saturday in 6:56.4 then third in its afternoon semifinal in 6:56.8 to advance to the petite final. The lineup for UNC's top boat was Shannon Wilson (coxswain), Maegan Wareham, Lisy McIntee, Lindley Barrow, Cara Van Dorn, Ruby Woodside, Whitney Hileman, Megan McMullin and Kathryn Winz.
Next up for the Tar Heels is the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, set for Saturday at Clemson's Lake Hartwell.
"We're starting to really see the speed that we want to see and expected to see from our team," Haney said. "There were a lot of smiles this weekend and there are a lot of things to feel good about as we head into ACC's."
