CARY, N.C. - Sophomore second baseman Kyle Seager belted a pair of two-run homers and drove in a career-high five runs to pace No. 4 North Carolina to a 12-3 series-opening win over Boston College Friday at Cary's USA Baseball National Training Complex. The Tar Heels, who have now won seven straight games, matched a season-best with four home runs and pounded out a season-high nine extra-base hits.
In addition to Seager, who posted third career multi-homer game, right fielder Tim Fedroff and catcher Mark Fleury also went deep for Carolina (32-7, 14-4 ACC). The Tar Heels hit four homers for the first time since doing it twice in the season-opening series at Florida Atlantic.
Seager, who has five homers over the last three ACC games, went 2-for-2 with two runs and the five RBI. He hit two-run home runs in the second and sixth innings and added a sacrifice fly in the third. With the five RBI Friday, the Kannapolis native has now driven in 17 runs over the last six games to increase his league-leading RBI total to 57.
To go along with his team-best ninth homer, Fedroff was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Left fielder Kyle Shelton also added two hits for Carolina, which tallied 13 base hits on the night.
With plenty of run support, right-hander Alex White (7-2) won his fourth straight decision with 6 2/3 strong innings for the Tar Heels. He scattered a career-high 10 hits and walked two but struck out six. Rob Wooten picked up the final out of the seventh before freshmen Logan Munson and Nate Striz closed with two shutout innings.
Boston College starter Terry Doyle (3-5) took the loss after allowing nine runs on eight hits over four innings. First baseman Michael Belfiore and designated hitter Mickey Wiswall each had three of the Eagles' 12 hits on the night.
Boston College (19-19, 5-14 ACC) snapped White's scoreless inning streak at 17 1/3 with two in the first on run-scoring hits by Eric Campbell and Wiswall, but Carolina bounced back with three in the second and three in the third to grab a 6-2 lead.
In the second, Seager followed a leadoff double from third baseman Chad Flack with a two-run home run to right on the first pitch he saw from Doyle to knot the score at two. Two batters later, Fleury connected on his second career homer - a solo shot to right - to give the Tar Heels their first lead.
Dustin Ackley jump-started the three-run third with a leadoff triple to right and came around to score on a double down the right field line by Fedroff. After the second run of the inning scored on a wild pitch by Doyle, Seager drove in his third run of the night with a sacrifice fly to center.
BC scratched out a run in the third on an RBI single by Sam Shaughnessy, but Carolina came right back with its third straight three-run inning to extend its lead to 9-3 through four.
After two-out walk to Ackley started the rally, Shelton singled to short and an errant throw by BC center fielder Mike Sudol allowed Ackley to score and Shelton to take third. Fedroff then belted his team-best ninth home run on a 1-1 pitch to left center to close the scoring in the fourth.
In the sixth, Ackley walked and scored on a triple by Shelton before Seager connected on his second two-run shot of the night and eighth of the season. He hit a 1-0 pitch from BC reliever Geoff Oxley out to right center to cap the scoring for Carolina.
The Tar Heels and Eagles are back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday with a game that will be televised locally on Fox Sports Net South. Sunday's game has been moved up to a noon start to accommodate Boston College's travel plans.
