LINCOLN, CALIF. -
The University of North Carolina women's golf team slipped to 18th place after the second round of the NCAA West Regional. Carolina carded a 23-over-par 311 on Friday for a 608 total at Lincoln Hills Golf Club. Southern California leads the 21-team field with a five-under-par 571 total after posting an even par 288.
Carolina junior Sydney Crane was the low Tar Heel in the second round. The Jamestown, N.C. native fired a two-over-par 74 for a four-over 148 total and is tied for 27th place. Sophomore Kate Thomas and junior Lauren Hunt both shot a five-over 77 in the second round. Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia, has a 147 total and is tied for 21st place while Hunt, from Little River, S.C., stands at 153 in a tie for 68th place. Senior Ann Laney posted an 83 for a 160 total and is tied for 95th and senior Colette Lowe carded an 84 for a 173 total and is tied for 102nd place.
Southern California holds a seven stroke advantage over UNLV which stands at two-over 578 after firing a two-over 290 in the second round. Arizona State is in third place after firing the day's low round, a three-under 285, for a 581 total. Oklahoma State is in fourth place with a 586 total while Arkansas and Arizona are tied for fifth at 588.
Therese Koelbaek of UNLV fired a four-under-par 68 for a seven-under 137 total to grab the individual lead going into the final round. Azahara Munoz of Arizona State is three strokes back in second place at 140 after firing a one-under 71 in the second round. Three players are tied for third place with three-under 141 totals - Southern California's Dewi Claire Schreefel, Oklahome State's Jaclyn Sweeney and Arizona's Alison Walshe. Tied for sixth place at two-under 142 are Southern California's Stefanie Endstrasser and Paola Morena.
The 54-hole event continues through Saturday. Live scoring throughout the tournament is available on Golfstat.com. The top eight teams and top two individuals not on those eight teams advance on to the NCAA Championship to be played May 20-23 at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
