TEAM NOTES
With Sunday's loss to Fresno State, the Tar Heels fell one win short of their third straight trip to the CWS Championship Series. No team has reached the finals three straight years since the NCAA went to its current format in 2003, and no team has played for the national title in three straight years since Texas did so in 1983-85.
Sunday's loss was just the second in eight elimination games over the last two postseasons for UNC. The Tar Heels went 6-2 in elimination games over the 2007 and 2008 NCAA tourneys and went 5-2 in CWS elimination games over this stretch.
Over UNC's school-record run of three straight CWS appearances, the Tar Heels have logged an 11-7 record. Carolina is 13-15 in seven trips to Omaha, and head coach Mike Fox has been a part of each win as a coach (11) or player (2).
The Tar Heels are now 73-52 all-time in 23 trips to the NCAA Tournament. Mike Fox is now 38-20 in nine trips to the postseason.
The Tar Heels' 54 victories this season match the 2006 team for the second most in school history. The Tar Heels have posted the top three win totals in school history over the last three years (54, 57 and 54) and lead the nation with 165 wins in 2006-08. UNC is the only team to win 50-plus games in each of the last three years.
Carolina's senior class posted 206 wins over the last four seasons to rank as the winningest class in program history by a margin of 44 victories. This six-man group reached made three straight CWS appearances, won the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference championship and reached four straight NCAA tournaments.
The six runs allowed by the Tar Heels marked their most surrendered in Omaha and were the most allowed since a 16-8 win over Mount St. Mary's to open the NCAA Cary Regional. Carolina allowed five or more runs just three times in 10 NCAA Tournament games and dropped two of these games to Fresno State.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
Sophomores Dustin Ackley (3-5) and Tim Fedroff (3-4) combined for six of Carolina's 10 hits on the night to finish the year with 116 hits and 115 hits, respectively. Ackley's 116 hits rank second in school history behind his 119 in 2007, while Fedroff's 115 hits rank third at Carolina. Fedroff and Ackley rank second and third nationally in hits this year behind Florida State's Buster Posey (119).
Tim Fedroff finishes the season with a career-best 16-game hitting streak, while Dustin Ackley ends his year on a 13-game hitting streak. Both streaks can carry over to the 2009 season.
Dustin Ackley finishes the season with a .417 average, which is third in school history and the best mark since Brian Roberts hit .427 in 1997.
In the 2008 NCAA Tournament, Tim Fedroff hit .524 (22-42) with 12 RBI, while Dustin Ackley hit .511 (23-45) with seven RBI. Ackley hit .522 (12-23) in Omaha, while Fedroff hit .476 (10-21) at the CWS to lead the team.
With one hit Sunday, Chad Flack moved into a tie for third in CWS history with 22 base hits. Classmate Seth Williams has 20 career hits in Omaha, which is tied for sixth. Flack set the all-time record for career at-bats in the CWS in Saturday's win over Fresno State and finishes his CWS career with a record 73 at-bats.

After posting 12 strikeouts and no runs allowed in his first 9 2/3 career relief innings, White allowed two runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings Sunday. White entered with the bases loaded and one out for second straight day and kept Fresno State off the scoreboard in both instances.
Alex White recorded all three wins by the Tar Heels in Omaha to match the record for a single College World Series held by eight other pitchers
Right-hander Rob Wooten made his 11th College World Series appearance in the Tar Heels' last 12 games in Omaha to grab second place on the CWS career appearance record list. J. Brent Cox of Texas set the record with 13 appearances between 2003-05. Wooten pitched in six of seven CWS games a year ago and all five this season.

Veterans Tim Federowicz, Chad Flack and Seth Williams each started their 18th career game in Omaha Sunday. This trio has started every CWS game for Carolina over the last three seasons. Garrett Gore, who has made 17 CWS starts, is the only other player to play in each game. The record for CWS games played in 20.
