Tar Heel Softball Welcomes Class of 2012

The North Carolina softball team held its annual Rookie Brunch this past Sunday in Rams Room in the Kenan Fieldhouse to welcome their incoming freshmen class before starting their fall workouts. The gathering gave the freshmen and their families an opportunity to visit with the coaches, players and support staff while also looking back at the successful 2008 season and look ahead to the upcoming 2009 campaign.
The class of 2012 includes:
Leah Francona - INF - Brookline, Mass.
Francona is a middle infielder from Brookline High School and plays her summer ball for the Polar Crush. She was First Team All-Bay State League and earned league MVP honors as a sophomore. During her time in Pennsylvania she was named Second Team All-Southeast Pennsylvania, Courier Times and Suburban One League as an outfielder. Francona was also named to the inaugural Carpenter Cup All-Star team. She will join her sister, Alyssa, who will be a senior in 2009.
Kelsey Green - SS - McLean, Va.
Green is a shortstop who hails from Langley High School where she has been a three-time first team all-district selection. Along with a first team all-region honor, Green has been named to the all-region second team twice and was named Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention. A Gatorade Rookie Player of the Year, Green, plays her summer ball for Shamrocks who placed fifth at the ASA Gold Nationals in 2007.
Constance Orr - 1B/P - Charlotte, N.C.
Orr a pitcher/first baseman from Charlotte, N.C. helped lead her Butler High School team to the 2008 4A State Championship for the third consecutive year. A right-handed pitcher, Orr finished the season with a perfect 22-0 record with 231 strikeouts in 140 innings. Orr finished the 2008 season with a 0.02 ERA, the second-best mark in state history after allowing just four earned runs. She was named the 2008 Southwestern 4A Player of the Year as well as the Charlotte Observer 2008 Player of the Year after her stellar year in the circle.
Kelli Wheeler - OF - Marietta, Ga.
Wheeler is an outfielder from Lassiter High School, which captured the 5A state championship in 2007. Wheeler is a two-time all-state honoree in Georgia and has been named the Cobb County Player of the Year the last two seasons. A four-time all-region selection, Wheeler plays her summer ball for the East Cobb Bullets.
