CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina assistant softball coach Beverly Smith has been elevated to associate head coach as announced by head coach Donna J. Papa Tuesday. Smith is a 1994 alum of UNC where she was named the ACC Player of the Year in 1994. Smith spent the 1998-2002 seasons in Chapel Hill before returning again in 2004 to lead the pitching staff. A pair of pitchers have earned All-America honors under Smith's tutelage including rising junior Danielle Spaulding in 2008.
"I am pleased to elevate Beverly to Associate Head Coach, she has been an integral part of the Carolina Softball program over the last 10 years as my assistant as well as distinguishing herself as an outstanding softball player here," Head Coach Donna J. Papa said. "Her recruiting efforts have helped us put together six NCAA appearances in the last seven years and under her direction, our pitching staff had one of our most outstanding seasons to date last year."
In 2008, the Tar Heels turned in the fifth-best earned run average in the nation at 1.12 en route to leading the team to its first 50-win season in school history. Carolina went on to host the first-ever NCAA regional at Anderson Stadium as a number two seed in the NCAA Tournament.
