Carolina Golfers Tied For Fifth Place At Cougar Classic

The University of North Carolina women's golf team is tied for fifth place after firing a four-over-par 292 total in the first round of the Cougar Classic. The Tar Heels are just four strokes behind Virginia and Georgia which are tied at even par 288.
The Tar Heels were led by senior Sydney Crane, from Jamestown, N.C., who fired a one-under-par 71 and is tied for eighth place going into the second round. Freshman Allie White, from Lancaster, Ohio, carded an even par 72 and is tied for 13th place. Kate Thomas, a junior from Murwillumbah, Australia, posted a 74 and is tied for 27th place while senior Lauren Hunt, from Little River, S.C., and freshman Catherine O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.,both carded three-over 75s and are tied for 39th place.
Mallory Hetzel of Georgia and Whitney Newhauser of Virginia both fired a four-under 68 and are tied for the individual lead going into the second round. Julie Saleeby of NC State and Caroline Westrup of Florida State are one shot back at three-under 69 in a tie for third place. A trio of players is tied for fifth place at two-under 70 - South Carolina's Katie Burnett and Benedicte Toumpsin, and Georgia's Marta Silva. Carolina's Crane is one of five players tied for eighth place at one-under 71.
In the team race, South Carolina is in third place at 290, two strokes behind Virginia and Georgia. NC State is in fourth place at three-over 291 while Carolina and Florida State are tied for fifth with 292 totals. Alabama is seventh at 293 while LSU and Notre Dame are tied for eighth at 297 while host Charleston is 10th at 300.
The 54-hole event continues through Tuesday and is being played at Yeamans Hall which features a par 72, 6,159 yards.
