Carolina Golfers In Sixth Place At Cougar Classic

The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired an eight-over-par 296 for a 12-over 588 total and is in sixth place after two rounds of the Cougar Classic. Georgia grabbed the team lead after a blistering nine-under 279 on Monday for a nine-under 567 total.
"I'm pleased with a lot that I'm seeing out there," says Tar Heel head coach Sally Austin. "We're glad to be sixth. We feel we can move up, but I'm pleased with what I'm seeing out there. This is a strong field - there are some good teams here."
Freshman Allie White, from Lancaster, Ohio, led the Tar Heels in the second round firing a two-under 70. White, along with senior Sydney Crane, stands at two-under 142 for the tournament in a tie for sixth place. Both players birdied the par-5 18th hole. Crane, from Jamestown, N.C., fired a one-under 71 on Monday. Junior Kate Thomas and freshman Catherine O'Donnell are both going into the final round at eight-under 152 in a tie for 53rd place. O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., carded a 77 in the second round while Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia, posted a 78. Lauren Hunt, a senior from Little River, S.C. shot 79 for a 154 total and is tied for 74th.
Mallory Hetzel of Georgia grabbed the individual lead after firing a three-under 69 for a seven-under 137 total. Four players are three strokes back in a tie for second place at four-under 140 - South Carolina's Katie Burnett, Virginia's Whitney Neuhauser, Georgia's Marta Silva and Florida State's Caroline Westrup. Carolina's White and Crane are among seven players tied for sixth place at two-under 142.
Virginia carded a four-over-par 292 on Monday for a four-over 580 total and is in second place, 13 strokes behind the Bulldogs. Alabama is one shot back in third place at five-under 581. South Carolina is fourth at 586 and LSU is fith at 587, one stroke ahead of the Tar Heels.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Tuesday at Yeamans Hall Golf Club which features a par 72, 6,159-yard layout.
