NEWTON, Mass. - Midfielder Alejandro Bedoya's hat trick was the difference in a 4-1 win for No. 16 Boston College over No. 7 North Carolina Friday in Atlantic Coast Conference men's soccer action at the Eagles' Newton Campus Soccer Complex. Junior forward Eddie Ababio's career-best fifth goal was the lone score of the night for the Tar Heels (5-1-1, 1-1-0 ACC).
Behind Bedoya, who scored in the 43rd, 48th and 73rd minutes, the Eagles (3-2-1, 1-1-0) recorded a 16-9 edge in shots and matched the Tar Heels with seven corner kicks. Goalkeeper Chris Brown recorded two saves for BC, as did Brooks Haggerty for Carolina.
Bedoya put the Eagles on the board late in the first half off an Edvin Worley assist at the 42:44 mark and followed with a header early in the second half to give BC a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute. Mario Uribe scored just over a minute later to stake the Eagles to a third-goal cushion at 49:18.
Ababio, who entered the match as the ACC's fourth leading scorer, broke the ice for the Tar Heels at 63:29 off a through ball from freshman defender Sheanon Williams, who picked up his second assist on the play. Ababio scored on a left-footed shot off a feed from Williams on the right side.
Bedoya answered for the Eagles at the 72:24 mark off an assist from Shawn Chin for the 4-1 final margin. Bedoya scored from eight yards out off a lob from Chin.
