CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After recording their largest margin of victory since 2000 last time out, No. 12 North Carolina enters the second week of a four-match homestand Tuesday against UNC Asheville at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field. A webcast of the in-state meeting between the Tar Heels (7-1-1) and Bulldogs (2-3-2) will be available line and on-demand via ACC Select.
Behind four goals from senior forward Brian Shriver and two scores from sophomore forward Eddie Ababio, Carolina notched an 8-0 victory over East Tennessee State last Saturday. The Tar Heels' eight goals marked the most scored by an NCAA Division I team this season, outdistancing the seven goals netted by Old Dominion against Bryant Sept. 19.
Shriver, who scored the most goals by a Tar Heel since Ryan Kneipper matched a school record with five goals against Winthrop in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, and Ababio share the team lead with seven goals apiece and rank among the top four scorers in the ACC. Shriver and Ababio also are tied for 18th nationally in goals per game.
With this forward tandem leading the way, the Tar Heels share the national scoring lead with No. 1 Wake Forest. Carolina's 25 goals are just three scores shy of its scoring total through 20 games a year ago. In addition to Shriver and Ababio, freshmen Alex Dixon (three goals) and Billy Schuler (two goals) also have added multiple scores on the year.
Defensively, the Tar Heels have yielded just nine goals, including only one score last week. Senior goalkeeper Jacob Wescoe is second in the ACC with a 0.57 goals against average.
Carolina is 8-0 all-time versus UNC Asheville and has not allowed a score in the series. The Tar Heels won 3-0 in the teams' last meeting in 2004.
The Bulldogs have scored eight goals in seven games this season with Ryan Haupt and Bryan George leading the way with two scores each.
Following Tuesday's game, Carolina returns to ACC action Friday against Virginia at Fetzer at 7 p.m. The game will also be carried by ACC Select.
