WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior forward Eddie Ababio scored the tying and go-ahead goals in a 10-minute span in the second half to lead No. 15 North Carolina to a 3-1 win over South Carolina Friday at Wake Forest's Deacon Fall Classic at Spry Stadium. The Tar Heels (3-0-0) extended their current winning streak to seven straight over the Gamecocks (1-1-1) with the victory.
In addition to Ababio's scores in the 60th and 69th minutes, freshman Billy Schuler netted his first career goal in the 72nd minute to close the scoring for the Tar Heels. Cameron Brown, who set up Ababio's second goal, recorded his second assist of the season.
Ababio, who recorded his first career multi-goal game, leads the Tar Heels with seven points on three goals and an assist this season. His three goals are already a single-season career high.
Defensively, the Tar Heels allowed their first goal of the season but held South Carolina to just four shots in the match, including just one after intermission. Senior Jacob Wescoe went the distance in goal and made one save.
The Gamecocks got on the board first late in the opening half when Stephen Morrissey scored from seven yards out in the 43rd minute off assists from Sam Arthur and David Smith.
After controlling play in the first half, the Tar Heels, who outshot South Carolina 23-4, broke the game open in the second. Ababio tied the match at 59:48 with a shot from just inside the 18 off an assist from freshman defender Sheanon Williams, who served the ball from just past midfield.
Ababio struck again just over nine minutes later when he headed home a cross from Brown from four yards out at 68:50. Brown served the ball from the right side of the box to Ababio on the left.
Schuler closed the scoring for Carolina at 71:01 with an unassisted goal from 16 yards out into the right side of the net.
The Tar Heels are back in action Sunday on the final day of the Deacon Fall Classic against No. 14 UCLA at 1 p.m.
