CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina softball team lost both games to UNC Greensboro to round out their softball fall season. Carolina dropped game one with a score of 4-2 and game two with a score of 6-2. Both losses were the first for the softball squad this fall, who was 5-0 entering this past weekend. Carolina posted wins over Elon, Campbell and UNC Wilmington before this weekend.
In game one, Carolina was held hitless in the first five innings against the Spartans. Dani Manko broke the hitless streak against UNC Greensboro in the fifth inning, as Constance Orr got the Heels on the board with a base hit. UNC Greensboro thwarted the Tar Heels effort with two excellent defensive plays to end the Heels' scoring threat. Carolina tied the game at two in the seventh inning behind a key sacrifice bunt from senior Anna Roberts and a clutch base hit from freshman Paige Williams scoring pinch runner Christine Knauer. The Tar Heels and Spartans entered the international tie breaker in the eighth inning as the Spartans scored two runs on two hits. The Tar Heels feel short as UNC Greensboro's Amber Harrell struck out the side to end the game. Offensive leaders in game one were Orr (1-for-1, RBI) and Paige Williams (1-for-3, RBI). In the circle, Danielle Spaulding pitched six innings rendering two runs on three hits while striking out 11 Spartan batters. Amber Johnson took the tough loss, allowing one earned run on three hits.
In game two, Carolina got off to a fast start to open the game behind Christine Knauer and Anna Roberts speed. Knauer walked to open the game and stole second and third before Roberts also drew a walk and then stole second. Ally Blake belted a base hit scoring both Kanuer and Roberts to put the Heels on the board early, but the quick scores proved to be the only runs for the Tar Heels. In the circle, Constance Orr went five innings giving up four runs on three hits, including a home run in the fifth. Amber Johnson again pitched in relief rendering one run on one hit in two innings pitched. Top performers at the plate for the Tar Heels were Blake (1-for-3, 2 RBI), Knauer (1-for-3, 2 SB), Orr (1-for-2), freshman Tisha Mahon (1-for-2, SB) and Kelsey Green (1-for-3). Carolina's fall season is now complete as they continue to prep for the spring season.
