CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomores Billy Schuler and Kirk Urso were the beneficiaries of a pair of assists from freshman Enzo Martinez and No. 2 North Carolina snapped a three-game losing skid to Campbell, 2-0, Tuesday at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels (9-1-2) remain unbeaten on their home pitch with their first victory over the Camels (4-7-1) since 2002.
Martinez, who notched his first collegiate multi-assist game, set up Schuler in the 28th minute for the game-winner and then found Urso in the 72nd to put the match away. Martinez, who was starting in place of injured midfielder Cameron Brown, now leads Carolina with four assists on the season.
The Tar Heel defense limited the Camels to just five shots en route to its sixth shutout of 2009. Campbell put only one shot on frame all night, and it was denied by UNC senior goalkeeper Brooks Haggerty to give the Tar Heels four clean sheets in their last five outings.
Goalkeeper Ted Awana made a career-best 11 saves for the Camels, who saw a four-match unbeaten streak snapped.
After Jordan Graye nearly broke the ice for Carolina in the opening minutes of the match, Schuler put the Tar Heels in front at 27:48 when he turned and fired from 20 yards off Martinez's first helper. Schuler chested down the service just outside the 18, pivoted and sent the ball into the upper right corner for his fifth goal and a 1-0 UNC lead.
Bill Dworsky nearly doubled the lead in the 37th minute when his shot on goal was poked over crossbar by Awana, who made five saves in the opening half. Carolina finished the opening period with nine shots to just two for Campbell.
The Camels threatened early in the second period when Mitchell Cardenas sent a 27-yard free kick just high in the 61st minute, and Keegan Terry followed two minutes later with a blast off the crossbar in the 63rd.
After the Tar Heels withstood the Camels' flurry, Martinez struck again in the 72-minute when he got up off the ground on the right flank, regained possession of the ball from two Campbell defenders and pushed forward. He then sent a cross to Urso on the left, who dribbled into the box and sent a 12-yard blast into the right side of the net for a two-goal cushion at 71:29. The score was Urso's third of the season and first since netting two goals in the season-opening win over UNC Asheville.
Schuler, who has five goals in the last eight games, nearly found the back of the net for a second time when he sent a shot from the six off the crossbar in the 82nd minute.
The Tar Heels are back in action at home Saturday in the final ACC home match of the season against Boston College at 7 p.m. Saturday.
