The North Carolina women's golf team fired a 20-over-par 308 in the first round of the NCAA Fall Preview and stands in 17th place. The prestigious event showcases the top finishes in last year's NCAA Championship and is being played at the Country Club of Landfall's Dye Course, the site of the 2010 NCAA Championships.
Carolina senior Kate Thomas led the way for the Tar Heels firing a two-over-par 74 on Friday. The Murwillumbah, Australia, native stands tied for 25th place. Sophomore Catherine O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., carded a three-over 75 and is tied for 36th place. Courtney Gunter, a freshman from Matthews, N.C., shot a 77 and is tied for 50th while Sarah Thead, a junior from Poway, Calif., shot 82 and is tied for 78th and Jordan Allyne, a junior from Bellevue, Wash., shot 84 and is alone in 86th place.
Southern California leads the field of 18 teams after firing an even-par 288 in the first round. UCLA and Arizona State are five strokes back in a tie for second place with 293 totals. Duke is in fourth place at eight-over 296 while Alabama is fifth at 298, Auburn is sixth at 299 and Virginia is seventh at 300.
Carlota Ciganda of Arizona State and Camilla Lennarth of Alabama both fired a four-under-par 68 and stand tied for the individual lead. Cydney Clanton of Auburn and Cheyenne Woods of Wake Forest are two strokes back at two-under 70 in a tie for third place. Four players are tied for fifth place at one-under 71 - Duke's Lindy Duncan, New Mexico's Rebecca Hellbom, Michigan State's Laura Kueny and Southern California's Belen Mozo.
The 54-hole event continues through Sunday at the Country Club of Landfall's Dye Course which features a par 72, 6,325-yard layout.
