Tar Heel golfer Jack Fields fired a blistering nine-under-par 63 in the second round of the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate to lead Carolina to a four-under-par 284 in the afternoon round. The Tar Heels carded a 293 in the morning's first round to finish the day with a one-over 577 total, good for ninth place going into Sunday's final round.
Fields' 63 set a new tournament record (was 64). That, along with his even-par 72 in the first round, bolted him into a tie for the individual lead at nine-under 135 going into Sunday's final round. His second round was highlighted by two eagles, six birdies and just one bogey. Fields' two eagles came on the par-5 18th hole (his 14th hole) and the par-5 4th hole (his 18th hole). It was the eagle-3 on his final hole that bolted the Southern Pines, N.C., native into a tie for the lead.
Junior Henry Zaytoun III, from Raleigh, N.C., fired a pair of one-over-par 73s for a two-over 146 total and is tied for 40th place. Freshman Michael McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., carded a pair of 75s for a 150 total and is tied for 55th. David Holzworth, a senior from Chapel Hill, posted rounds of 78-73 for a 151 total and is tied for 64th while Kevin O'Connell, a junior from Cary, N.C., shot 73-79 for a 152 total and is tied for 69th. Two Tar Heel competed as individuals. Senior Chase MacFarland, from Savannah, Ga., fired rounds of 71-73 for an even-par 144 total and is tied for 27th place while junior Philip Chauncey, from Durham, N.C., shot a pair of 75s for a 150 total and is tied for 55th.
Michigan leads the 15-team field with a 16-under 560 total after firing rounds of 283-277. Georgia Tech is four strokes back in second place with a 564 total. Virginia is third at 569 while Tennessee, Augusta State and Michigan State are tied for fourth place with 570 totals.
Carolina's Fields and Michigan's Jack Schultz lead all individuals with nine-under 135 totals. Just one stroke back in a tie for third place at136 are John Tyler Griffin of Georgia Tech and Jack Newman of Michigan State. Ben Pisani is alone in fifth place with a 137 total. Virginia's Amory Davis and Augusta State's Mitchell Krywulycz are tied for sixth place with 138 totals while Michigan's Lion Kim and Georgia Tech's Kyle Scott are tied for eighth place at 139.
The 54-hole event continues through Sunday and is being played at Forest Oaks Country Club which features a par 71, 7,217-yard layout.
