The win is Carolina's seventh of the season (7-3). UNC is now bowl eligible for the second straight season. The Tar Heels have not played in consecutive bowl games since making seven straight bowl appearances from 1992-98.
Carolina head coach Butch Davis, who coached at Miami for six seasons, improved to 3-0 against the Hurricanes since taking over in Chapel Hill prior to the 2007 season. UNC leads its all-time series with Miami, 8-5, with a 4-0 mark in Chapel Hill.
Carolina has now won its last five games against an Associated Press Top 25 opponent. The Tar Heels are 2-0 this season with wins over No. 12 Miami and No. 14 Virginia Tech after beating Connecticut, Boston College and Georgia Tech when ranked a year ago.
No. 12 Miami marked the highest-ranked team the Tar Heels have defeated since topping the then-No. 4 Hurricanes in 2004.
Junior cornerback Kendric Burney intercepted three passes and returned them for 170 yards. The 170 yards were an Atlantic Coast Conference record for a single game. The 170 yards also broke the UNC record for interception return yardage in an entire season. He also became Carolina's all-time leader in interception return yardage.
The 170 yards broke the single-game ACC record. Previous was 128 by Duke's Dennis Tabron vs. Clemson on October 18, 1980.
The 170 yards broke the single-game UNC record. Previous was 125 by Bill Maceyko vs. Maryland in 1948.
The 170 yards broke the UNC single-season UNC record. Previous was 160 by linebacker Brian Simmons in 1996.
The 170 yards increase his career INT return yardage to 317 to break the UNC career record. Previous was 206 by Kareen Taylor from 2003-06.
Burney is now second in ACC history with 317 career interception return yards, trailing only John Talley of Duke, who had 395.
Burney's three interceptions equaled the national single-game high this season, and his 170 return yards are the most in the nation in a single game in 2009.
Burney returned his second interception 77 yards for a touchdown for his second career interception return score, tying a school record now held by seven Tar Heels. His 77-yard return was the seventh-longest in school history, and Burney now has two of Carolina's eight longest interception returns.
Burney became the first Tar Heel with three interceptions in a game since Dre' Bly against Georgia Tech in 1996. Burney had his first multi-interception game of the season and the second of his career (Boston College, 2008).
The 214 yards by Carolina on interception returns today (170 by Burney and 44 by Melvin Williams) set a school record. Previous high was 168 at NC State in 2007. In that game, Burney had a 76-yard return for a touchdown.
The 90-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, on which Burney and Melvin Williams combined on the return yardage, is the fourth-longest INT return in UNC history. The only longer returns are 100 yards by Bob Gantt vs. William and Mary in 1950, 100 yards by Reggie Love vs. Tulane in 1994 and 92 by Charles Brown at NC State in 2007.
Carolina posted its second four-interception game of the season and first since the win over Georgia Southern. The Tar Heels had three interceptions in the first half, the first time it picked three in a half under Butch Davis and the first time since a 2005 loss at Miami at the Orange Bowl.
With four interceptions, Carolina now has picked off 10 passes in three games against Miami under Butch Davis - four in 2007, two in 2008 and four in 2009.
Junior tight end Zack Pianalto caught at least five passes for the fourth straight game in which he has played. He finished with a game-high five catches for 51 yards and has 16 catches over Carolina's three-game winning streak.
Junior quarterback T.J. Yates finished 17 for 31 for 213 yards. It was his third 200-yard passing game this year and his first since the win over East Carolina on September 19. He tossed a 29-yard scoring pass to Greg Little, his 35th career touchdown strike. That ties him for second in UNC history with Chris Keldorf.
Sophomore placekicker Casey Barth made four field goals (22, 42, 32 and 33 yards) and has connected on his last 13 attempts, including eight in the last two games. His 42-yarder matched a career-best kick against Notre Dame last season.
Junior safety Da'Norris Searcy made his first career interception in the first quarter and also returned his first career kickoff 23 yards.
Junior wide receiver Greg Little caught his third touchdown pass of the season and scored for the fourth time overall to give UNC a 7-0 lead in the second quarter. Little has 10 career scores (six rushing, four receiving).
Junior Johnny White's 25-yard reception in the second quarter marked his longest catch since a 33-yard grab in 2007.
Sophomore fullback Devon Ramsay's 27-yard reception in the first quarter was a career-long catch.
True freshman Mywan Jackson, who has played on special teams already this season, saw action on offense for the first time. He took a shuttle pass from T.J. Yates for 12 yards in the first quarter.
