North Carolina has now won four straight games. The Tar Heels' last four-game win streak came in 2001 when they won five straight.
Carolina has now won eight games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1996 (10) and 1997 (11).
UNC head coach Butch Davis improved to 8-0 vs. Boston College, including six wins at Miami and two at North Carolina.
Carolina has forced 22 turnovers in the last six games, after only producing seven in the first five. The Tar Heels have nine interceptions over the last two weeks, including five vs. Boston College and four vs. Miami.
Carolina intercepted five passes today, the most since Duke threw five interceptions in 1997.
Sophomore defensive end Robert Quinn forced a fumble with a sack on the second play from scrimmage today. Quinn now has 11 sacks.
North Carolina scored on its first possession of the game, driving 70 yards on 11 plays, culminating in a 1-yard Ryan Houston touchdown run. It is Houston's eighth touchdown of the season and first since the Georgia Southern game.
Carolina scored two defensive touchdowns in the first quarter - a 20-yard fumble return by defensive lineman Cam Thomas and a 29-yard interception return by cornerback Kendric Burney. The Tar Heels now lead the ACC with seven non-offensive touchdowns this season. UNC has scored four defensive touchdowns in the last two games.
North Carolina's 21 points in first quarter are the most in a quarter since scoring 28 vs. Georgia Southern earlier this year.
Kendric Burney made his fifth interception of the season and ninth of his career, and returned it for a 29-yard touchdown in the first quarter. It was Burney's third career interception return for a touchdown, which is a school record. The previous record of two was held by seven players - Burney, George Barclay (1932-34), Bill Maceyko (1946-48), Al Goldstein (1957-59), Greg Poole (1979-82), Dre' Bly (1996-98) and Kareen Taylor (2003-06).
Burney, who entered the game as Carolina's career record holder in interception return yards, increased his total to 346, which ranks second all-time in the ACC behind Duke's John Talley (395).
Safety Deunta Williams intercepted three passes for 103 yards, including a long of 48. He now has six interceptions on the season and 12 for his career. Today was Williams' 21st birthday.
North Carolina's streak of 20 consecutive red zone conversions came to an end in the third quarter when T.J. Yates threw an interception in the end zone.
Freshman wide receiver Erik Highsmith tied his season high with six receptions for 38 yards. He also had six catches this season vs. East Carolina and Georgia Tech. He now has 33 catches, which is just six shy of the school record for receptions by a freshman.
