CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Carolina sophomore right-hander Colin Bates, who is slated to open the season as the Tar Heels' closer and is an accomplished artist, was recently featured in an NCAA-sponsored online Student-Athlete Art Exhibition.
An example of Bates' work can be found by scrolling through this PDF file full of the student-athletes' work. Bates uses acrylic paint and colored pencil in his work, which usually features a sports theme.
His piece in the NCAA online exhibition depicts a favorite hoopster in both North Carolina and Bates' native Illinois, and he recently had Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona sign a piece of his work that featured several Red Sox players at the Carolina First Pitch Dinner.
Bates, who was a freshman All-America a year ago, is is an amazing comeback story and is a true example of a student-athlete. He is a student in Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School and was a member of the All-ACC Academic Team for baseball and the ACC Academic Honor Roll a year ago.
