Chapel Hill, N.C. ----- As part of the University of North Carolina Athletic Department's Outreach Program, four Tar Heel football players spent nearly two hours Thursday afternoon playing games and speaking to a group of kids at the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA. Safety Deunta Williams, linebacker Kevin Reddick and tailbacks Shaun Draughn and Johnny White represented the Tar Heels at the event.
"It was a lot of fun," said rising junior Deunta Williams. "I remember being their age and being in those type of youth programs when I was a kid. I always enjoyed when others would come speak to our group. This is my way of giving back and I enjoy helping the kids."
Each player introduced himself to the group and provided a motivational message. Williams, who grew up a Carolina fan in Jacksonville, N.C., talked about setting lofty goals and the power of a great work ethic.
"I talked about dreaming big, doing your school work and working hard," said Williams. "Hard work will pay off. I laughed because they told us we were giants, but I told them we were once like them too and with hard work anything can be achieved."
In honor of February being Black History month, the players and kids enjoyed a round of Black History Bingo, answering questions about famous African-Americans to complete their gameboard. They also enjoyed a game of kick ball.
"A lot of the kids were in awe of the players," said Jeff Lloyd of the Chapel Hill YMCA. "All four players did an incredible job of encouraging and inspiring the kids to become anything they want to be in life. It was a great event."
