Tar Heels Down Oregon, 15-7, In Home Opener

CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 this season with a 15-7 victory over Oregon on Friday evening in the Tar Heels' 2009 home opener at Fetzer Field. Jenn Russell had four goals and an assist for Carolina, which improves to 5-0 all-time against Oregon. The Ducks fall to 1-2 with the loss.
Russell scored three of her goals in the first half as the Tar Heels built a 10-3 lead at the break. Megan Bosica had two goals and two assists for Carolina, while Chelsea Parks had two goals and an assist, Corey Donohoe had two goals and Megan Bosica had a goal and an assist.
Alicia Burkhart led Oregon with two goals in the loss.
The Tar Heels got the scoring off to an early start with a goal at the 28:57 mark by Donohoe off an assist from Kristen Taylor. Carolina followed with two more quick goals by Russell (unassisted at 27:10) and Bosica off an assist from Parks with 25:43 left in the half. Freshman Becky Lynch scored off an assist from Russell with 23:02 to go to make it 4-0 and Parks scored unassisted at the 15:34 mark to make it 5-0 and force a Duck timeout.
Oregon responded with an unassisted goal by Alicia Burkhart with 14:39 to go in the half that cut it to 5-1. Russell's second goal just 28 seconds later made it 6-1 Tar Heels. Oregon's Casey Rector took a pass from Bina Barrett and scored with 10:11 left in the half to make it 6-2 Carolina. Parks' second goal made it 7-2 with 9:13 to go in the opening stanza. Russell's third goal, Kelly Taylor's free position goal and Bosica's second goal gave the Tar Heels a 10-2 edge until Alex Breiner scored with 41 seconds left to make it 10-3 Tar Heels at the break.
In the second half, Russell scored her fourth goal just 50 seconds into the period to up the lead to 11-3 before Ilsa van den Berg responded with a goal off an assist from Celeste Mayer with 27:55 left to make the score 11-4 UNC. Kristen Taylor made it 12-4 scoring off a pass from Bosica. Oregon scored back-to-back goals to make the score 12-6 before three consecutive Tar Heel goals by Donohoe, Laura Zimmerman and Amber Falcone put the game out of reach at 15-6. A late goal by Jana Drummond on a free position attempt made the final score 15-7.
Logan Ripley started in goal for the Tar Heels and recorded five saves, allowing all seven Oregon goals. Anna Poponyak was in the cage for the Ducks, recording 11 saves and allowing 15 goals in 60 minutes.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Sunday when they host Richmond at 3 p.m. at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill.
