Tar Heels Dominate Richmond, 15-8

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team picked up its third victory in a row to start the 2009 season when it defeated Richmond by a 15-8 score on Sunday afternoon at sunny but breezy Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. Kristen Taylor and Corey Donohoe both had three goals and one assist for the Tar Heels.
Carolina also got two goals and two assists from Megan Bosica and two goals and one assist from Chelsea Parks, Becky Lynch and Jenn Russell. Meghan Clarke had a goal and an assist for the Tar Heels, while Amber Falcone added an assist.
Richmond was led by Allison Furstenburg's five goals. Mandy Friend had a goal and an assist, while Caitlin Fifield and Danielle Schaevitz had single goals.
Carolina improves to 3-0 on the season with its second home win of the weekend. The Tar Heels beat Oregon, 15-7, on Friday night in Chapel Hill and opened the year last weekend with a 14-13 overtime win at No. 12 Vanderbilt on Feb. 15.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first half. After Richmond won the opening draw control of the game, Kristen Taylor scored an unassisted goal to make it 1-0. Carolina won the next two draws and got unassisted goals from Bosica and Russell to make it 3-0. Friend's free position goal for Richmond made it 3-1 and then Friend dished to Fifield for a goal that made it 3-2 UNC.
Back to back goals by Russell on a free position attempt and by Kristen Taylor off a pass from Bosica on what began as a free position attempt made the score 5-2 Carolina and forced a Spider timeout with 10:52 left in the first half. Donohoe scored off an assist from Messinger that made it 6-2, then Parks sliced through the Richmond defense for an unassisted goal that made it 7-2.
Furstenburg scored an unassisted goal for Richmond that cut the lead to 7-3 with 2:36 left before the break, but freshman Lynch scored with 0:05 left before halftime off a pretty pass from Falcone to make it 8-3 at intermission. The Tar Heels out-shot Richmond by a 22-4 margin in the first 30 minutes.
In the second half, Bosica scored off a Parks assist at 25:36 to make the score 9-3 Tar Heels before Schaevitz scored on a free position opportunity for Richmond at 25:08 to cut the lead to 9-4. Back-to-back Tar Heel goals from Lynch (on a pass from Donohoe) and Kristen Taylor (off a pass from Lynch) made it 11-4 with 23:17 left to play. Furstenburg scored two consecutive goals to make it 11-6 with under 15 minutes left to play. Parks scored off a Russell assist, followed by a Clarke goal off a Kristen Taylor assist that made the score 13-6. Furstenburg scored her last two goals to cut the lead to 13-8, but Donohoe dropped in two goals in the final 4:22 for the final score of 15-8.
The Tar Heels will return to action next Sunday March 1, when they host four-time defending NCAA champion Northwestern at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill.
