CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina softball team announced Thursday that it has joined efforts with the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and will host a "Strike Out Cancer" event on March 7 when the Tar Heels host Michigan State at 5:30 p.m. The Tar Heels and Spartans will both sport teal shirts in support of ovarian cancer. Former Tar Heel Jamie (Shaver) Mayberry, who has battled ovarian cancer, will be throwing out the first pitch.
"I am truly honored and appreciative for this opportunity that Coach Papa and the University have given me to bring Ovarian Cancer awareness to the forefront. The four years under Coach Papa were very instrumental in preparing me for the challenges I have faced. I look forward to sharing this knowledge with the team and whoever else will listen," Jamie Mayberry said.
Mayberry, formerly Shaver, played for head coach Donna J. Papa and the Tar Heels from 1993-96 where she starred as the Tar Heels second baseman.
The UNC Softball Camp will be selling t-shirts for $20.00. All profits will be donated to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center benefitting research for ovarian cancer. Free Carolina bandanas will be given out to the first 200 fans as well.
The StrikeOut Cancer program is an initiative of the American Cancer Society and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association to help fight cancer by leveraging the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of fastpitch softball coaches nationwide. Coaches across the country work to increase cancer education and promote healthy living through awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs. StrikeOut Cancer provides critical mission outreach, while raising funds in support of the Society's lifesaving efforts to eliminate cancer as a life-threatening disease.
