The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired a one-under-par 287 in the first round of the LSU Golf Classic and is tied for third place, just three shots behind leader Wake Forest. Freshman Allie White led the Tar Heels by firing a four-under 68 and is tied for second place in the individual race.

White, from Lancaster, Ohio, fired the low round of her collegiate career with her previous low being a 69 scored in the Cougar Classic, the first event of the fall campaign. Two other Tar Heels are in the top 20 - senior Lauren Hunt, who is tied for 10th, and freshman Catherine O'Donnell, who is tied for 16th. Hunt, from Little River, S.C., fired a one-under 71 and O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., carded an even par 72. Kate Thomas, a junior from Murwillumbah, Australia, posted a four-over 76 and is tied for 58th while senior Sydney Crane, from Jamestown, N.C., shot 77 and is tied for 70th place.

Wake Forest fired a four-under-par 284 and leads the 18-team field. All five of the Demon Deacons finished tied for 16th or lower. Virginia is one stroke back in second place after carding a three-under 285, two shots ahead of the Tar Heels and host LSU who are tied for third place. Tulane is in fifth place at one-over 289 while UNC Wilmington and TCU are tied for sixth place with 290 totals.

Calle Nielson of Virginia grabbed the individual lead firing a five-under-par 67. Carolina's White and LSU's Jaqueline Hedwall are one stroke back in second place at 68. Natalie Sheary of Wake Forest fired a three-under 69 and is in fourth place. Five players are tied for fifth place at two-under 70.

The 54-hole event continues through Sunday at The University Club which features a par 72, 6,424-yard layout. Live scoring is available throughout the tournament on Golfstat.com.
