Tuscaloosa, Ala. ---- The University of North Carolina gymnastics team scored a 193.225 to finish third in a tri-meet vs. top 10 opponents Oklahoma and Alabama Friday evening. The Tar Heels performed well on vault and uneven bars, scoring more than 49.000 on each event.
"Unfortunately, the long travel schedule caught up to us tonight and we struggled at first with beam and floor," said head coach Derek Galvin. "I challenged the team after the first two events and we finished strong on bars and vault."
North Carolina scored a 49.025 on the vault as Kara Wright, Morgan Evans and Jennifer Valby scored a 9.825. Christine Nguyen posted a 9.800 and Zoya Johnson had a 9.750.
In the next event on bars, Wright led the Tar Heels with a 9.875, while Nguyen had a 9.825. Carolina scored a 49.025 on bars to finish strong.
"It was a situation where a little bit of fatigue caught up with the team," said Galvin. "We will return to Chapel Hill knowing what we need to work on and prepare for the EAGL championships in Raleigh."
