Dustin Ackley hit .648 with four home runs and Brie Felnagle upped her All-America count to 12 with a fifth-place finish in the mile and a second-place NCAA finish in the distance medley relay to share Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors for March 9-15, 2009.
Felnagle, a senior from Tacoma, became the first 12-time All-America in track at UNC since Shalane Flanagan when she earned a pair of All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas. Felnagle finished fifth overall in the mile in 4:37.00 a day after helping lead the women's distance medley relay team to a second place finish. She contributed 12 of Carolina's 14 points as the Tar Heels finished tied for 12th at the NCAA meet.
The group of Ashley Verplank, Elizabeth Mott, Callie Pottinger and Felnagle claimed a second place finish earning All-America honors, while setting a new school standard in the DMR. The time was nearly three seconds faster than the 2007 national champion squad that Felnagle appeared on as a sophomore.
Ackley, a junior from Walnut Cove, N.C., led No. 1 North Carolina to an unbeaten week by hitting .647 (11-17) with four home runs, seven RBI and seven runs scored. He also slugged 1.412 and reached base at a .700 clip in the Tar Heels' four victories. Ackley's four homers came over a span of just seven trips to the plate, including two home runs in the Wednesday win over Appalachian State for his third career multi-HR game. He was 4-for-4 in that win over the Mountaineers for his 11th career game with four-plus hits. Ackley went 6-for-9 in the series sweep at Virginia Tech with three hits and two RBI in each game. On the season, he is batting .426 with 20 runs, four home runs and 11 RBI.
