WASHINGTON, D.C. - The North Carolina rowing team finished its second competition of the spring with outstanding results, winning six of the team's eight races Saturday morning on the Potomac River. UNC and Duke battled against Georgetown and George Washington, switching opponents after one round of racing. The Tar Heels and Blue Devils raced against each other only once, in the final race of the day which was won by Carolina.
"The day went really well across the board," UNC head coach Sarah Haney said. "What we really like to see is that we were holding the stroke ratings that we wanted to hold through our pieces. Our starts, our race moves and our sprints were effective."
UNC's varsity eight won both of its races, opening the day with a time of 7:13.2 to Georgetown's 7:20.1. In varsity eight's second race, Carolina finished in 7:10.1, ahead of George Washington in 7:14.8. The UNC second varsity eight joined that race, finishing third in a time of 7:32.2. In its first race, UNC's second varsity eight came across in 7:28.3 to beat Georgetown (7:32.8).
The Carolina varsity eight lineup was Shannon Wilson (coxswain), Kelsey Grich, Kasey Munson, Megan McMullin, Eugenia Delbono, Ruby Woodside, Whitney Hileman, Andi Drabot and Katie Wood.
The Tar Heel second varsity eight was Sarah Nolan (coxswain), Kristi Roblin, Audrey Whitmeyer-Weathers, Lindley Barrow, Kathleen Reynolds, JoAnne Rogers, Anna Noguchi, Chandler Sours and Lindsay Paterniti.
The varsity four raced just once, in the final contest of the day. UNC took first in 7:52.7, with Duke second in 8:00.4 and Georgetown third in 8:15.9. Racing in the varsity four were Sarah Cook (coxswain), Paige Wolf, Caroline Rekuc, Brittany Walsh and Sarah Martin.
The first race of the day for UNC's novice eight produced one of the morning's slimmest margins, just 0.7 seconds. The Tar Heels finished in 7:07.2, with Georgetown crossing in 7:07.9. "It was a hard-fought race all the way down the race course," UNC novice coach Stephen Arthur-Wong said. "Every time one crew would get ahead the other would respond. It was a race that could have gone either way at the end. We feel lucky just to have been in such a great race, and winning it was icing on the cake." In the race against George Washington, UNC worked on lengthening its strokes and came away with a larger margin of victory, finishing in 7:27.7 to GW's 7:50.9.
The UNC lineup for the novice eight was Gali Hashmonay (coxswain), Emily Urquhart, Chelsea Zurl, Emily Ronco, Laura Frings, Caroline LaRoche, Sarah Day, Blair Meiggs and Jessica Crumpler.
The second novice eight fell to Georgetown's lightweight eight, but showed good technical improvement from its first race of the season. Georgetown won in 7:26.2, while UNC finished in 7:39.8 with a lineup of Sarah Neal (coxswain), Marie Balboa, Leah Kosow, Briana Mayes, Maya Jumper, Caitlin Ritchie, Natalie Daaka, Alya Elsayed-Ali and Caroline Jordan.
Carolina fielded two novice fours in a close race against George Washington, which came in first in a time of 8:29.8. UNC A finished in 8:29.9, with UNC B in 8:49.7. "It was another close race for us, but unfortunately we came up just a bit short this time," Arthur-Wong said. "It was still a great race to watch because the crews were evenly matched. It was truly a battle as even our oars clashed at one point during the race."
The UNC A lineup was Jennifer Nowicki (coxswain), Kosow, Balboa, Jumper and Mayes. UNC B was Neal (coxswain), Shelby Austin, Elsayed-Ali, Daaka and Ritchie.
Carolina travels to Occoquan, Va., to meet George Mason Sunday on the Occoquan Reservoir. "We have things to work on, like maintaining length with higher ratings and continuing to get faster as we move better together, but we're putting together all the things that we've worked on this week from what we learned last weekend," Haney said. "We're really pleased with how well we did today across the board and we look forward to racing George Mason tomorrow."
